Overall, our findings suggest a fairly broad consensus between journalists and users about what makes journalistic news high quality and indicate that audiences are more receptive to alternative role models in journalism when it comes to non-political news coverage (6/6).

Other roles differed in their appreciation more depending on the topic. While public service-oriented roles were more appreciated in political news, consumer-oriented roles were perceived as more valuable outside political reporting, especially the “service” role (5/6)

The most pronounced differences between both groups occurred with regard to the two public influence-oriented roles included in this study (“interventionism” and “loyal facilitator”), both of which found significantly less acceptance among journalists than among media users across all topics (4/6)

Our findings reveal overall more similarities than differences in audiences’ and journalists’ quality assessments regarding journalistic role performance – with a particularly high appreciation for the neutral “disseminator” role (3/6)

This experimental study investigates the influence of journalistic roles on media users’ (N = 636) and journalists’ (N = 253) news quality perceptions. Seven established journalistic roles were experimentally varied as concrete news features in political, health, and sports news stories (2/6)

(3/3) The variations that we found among the countries provide sufficient evidence that warns against broad generalizations and warrants a more nuanced theorization of this part of the world.

(2/3) As part of the Journalistic Role Performance project, we analyze 13,299 news stories in Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, and the UAE to explore how political systems, media ownership, and platforms shape journalistic roles in the news.

(3/3) The paper discusses how the level of country freedom moderates these relationships.

(2/3) Findings show that the geographic frame does not influence the performance of public service-oriented roles, while significantly impacts others: the service role is more dominant in domestic; infotainment is higher in foreign; and interventionism and loyalism are more prevalent in mixed news.
