Recently I called Sir Martyn Oliver, the chief inspector of Ofsted, a liar on 'X'. Despite this, Ofsted very kindly walked me through their proposals for the new inspection system. I am sorry to say that my feelings are probably even more entrenched than they were before…

A welcome development, but I'd be really grateful if everyone could stop announcing stuff and publishing reports as I have to keep updating a report I've just written!

When a measure becomes a target it ceases to be a good measure.

The PM's inclusion of #earlyyears in today's milestones is welcome, but the fact is the pressure to increase EYFS profile results will fall on schools, who do the assessment. And teacher asst is more sensitive to outside pressures.

Keir is right to point out the issues with school readiness, but what he didn't highlight was that, for children eligible for Free School Meals, the proportion achieving a good level of development is barely over *50%*. And the gap between poorer kids and their peers is on the rise...

It's great to hear early years being discussed on the news, but I wish they'd stop referring to EYFSP stats as showing how many children are 'ready for school'. They've already been at school for a year!
