Publicité sur un bus de la part de la préfète de la Drôme, avec le message "tu consommes tu cautionne". Un jeune garçon effrayé a des sachets de poudre à vendre, il attrape des billets qu'on lui tend, un caïd (on suppose) est derrière lui et lui tient les épaules ou le cou. Les deux en hoodie noir. Le garçon semble de type "maghrébin" et le caïd possiblement noir.

Drawing on Charles Hatfield's Hand of Fire (2012), we discussed CS Peirce's three functions of a sign (icon, symbol, index) and Thierry Groensteen's five principles of narrative drawing (from System of Comics), suggesting ways they might be used to describe the comics art we see. #comicsteaching

"We can start by unpacking one of Peirce’s triads, or so-called trichotomies,
of signs, with a tip of the hat to graphic design theorist Clive Ashwin (whose
application of Peirce to the art of drawing, published in 1989, sparked my
own). If we define a sign, in semiotic fashion, as anything taken to refer to,
or stand for, something else, then the drawings and panels and other symbols
that comprise comics are clearly signs.2 Peirce posited several different
ways of classifying signs, but the most influential of his classifications, and the
one I have in mind, rests on three different kinds of relationships he saw between
signs and their referents.3 These relationships may be roughly outlined
as follows:
1. A sign may be taken as an icon, meaning a semblance or likeness; that is, it
may be regarded as resembling its referent (take, for example, a portrait).
2. A sign may be taken as a symbol; that is, it may be understood as bearing an
entirely artificial, or conventional, relationship to its referent (a word, for
example, or alphanumeric symbol).
3. A sign may be taken as an index; that is, it may be understood as caused or
produced by its referent, or as being in a direct physical or demonstrative
relation to its referent: a pointer, in other words, rather like a demonstrative
pronoun (for instance, a fingerprint or bullet hole taken as evidence,
or, as Peirce said, a weathervane spinning in the wind or the sound of a
knock at the door)."

"Kirby’s art leans continually on what Groensteen identifies as the five undergirding
principles, or tendencies, in narrative drawing: anthropocentrism,
meaning a tendency to privilege characters in action and to treat each comics
panel as, primarily, a habitat for characters7; synecdochic simplification, meaning
the drawing’s tendency to excise elements unnecessary to the understanding
of the narrative, in effect paring away redundancies and representing the
whole of the situation through selected parts; typification, meaning the graphic
simplification of characters down to a handful of identifiable features (the modus
operandi of caricature and, of course, an invitation to the evils of stereotyping);
expressivity, meaning the evocativeness—the dramatic and emotional
loading or intensification—of each stand-alone image, in terms of gesture, expression,
and the semblance of movement; and, finally, rhetorical convergence,
a term more difficult to gloss but conveying, in essence, the way the comics
image strives after maximum legibility via the concurrence of all its various
graphic elements, from paneling to composition to rendering, et cetera (161–
62). In short, narrative drawing tends to be action- and character-oriented,
streamlined, dependent on typing, and expressive, and it obeys above all a
rhetorical function. Kirby’s art certainly is and does all of these things."

my youtube algorithm showed me a video on typing game design and I felt the need to yap in the comments on genre reasons why i designed the aLt-Project battle system the way that i did that I will point to and rewrite into some proper marketing copy later ig

aLt-Project is fairly similar to Keyboard Warrior RPG in some regards actually, having only seen the game through this video. I think we all definitely figured out that having actions assigned to keys with immediate feedback in the form of attacks per key is really satisfying. However, my game uses a card action system with words attached to them that are tied to specific attacks; you're typing in the name of attacks rather than pulling from unrelated wordbanks. Importantly, the cards are organized into unshuffled stacks that have a set order, making the card decks more akin to combo strings in action games.

While my fixed word card system this reduces the amount of variety in terms of what to actually type, with early playtest impressions I think in the long run it shouldn't be a huge issue. Having repetitive typing actions I find reduces cognitive load and lets the typing blend into the background and make room for emphasizing other elements of battles.

As someone making a game that emphasizes the RPG half more than the typing half, there are I think two weaknesses I find with the design of typing games that I wanted to address with my battle system: pacing and *variety in how to achieve victory*.

- WRT Pacing, I think the examples you give like Blood Typers making every action a typing input creates a lot of variety and challenge, but it is also kind of exhausting to play for long periods of time. I feel like with my experience with typing games I tend to see a lot of devs attach a lot of typification to many many basic actions, and it might just be me but having to constantly read and type not having to turn my brain off usually means I don't feel like playing typing games for super long periods of time.
Because I want my own game to be more appealing to a general RPG audience that can tolerate & enjoy low-demand activities like grinding, there's little typing to be done outside of battle and dungeon events to give them a rest and denotes the action of "typing" as one associated with "danger"/"risk". I also added FFVIIR-esque ATB commands that pause the action once the player uses up a card deck so that players can rest their hands in the middle of longer battles while still providing decision making engagement. (The command performs a special move before reshuffling the used cards.)

- WRT Variety in victory, a lot of typing games boil down to typing well and reacting fast, which while inherently engaging I don't think makes for games that both stand out and also stick. I think typing is one of those sub-genres that people I find always have an ambient curiosity in for both scarcity and relatability, but when actually playing the games the ones I've tried kind of failed to capture my longterm attention of "I want to play this to the end".
In terms of gameplan players will generally always win as long as they type really good with a lot of the games that exist; the more notable ones I've seen like Textorcist, Glyphica, Blood Typers etc. all supplement the typing gameplay with other elements that provide challenge outside of typing (to varying degrees of success). I am hoping the card and command systems that I have lends to the variety of RPG encounters that require good character setup to succeed.

my personal obsession, intellectually i suppose, is we're all way too into nouns and we need to get more into verbs.

so like: more action, less typification. people are ... encumbered by that identity binary of 'being a reader' or not ... in my longtime observation. and it's false, oftentimes.

Maus works. I do think comics, cartoons, illustrated stuff, hugely powerful. Audiobooks. (e.g. Mariah's, also mentioned there.) Any art that cuts through peoples' sense that they "don't read" or "aren't a reader."

(I’ve told this anecdote before just to repeat it quickly: I used to teach Maus back in the day to my classrooms of students at the University of Iowa. They were undergrads, usually on the younger side, usually polite. Some would arrive knowing nothing about the Holocaust seemingly, whether they’d started out in Chicago or China, as were both common. My students were non-English majors being forced to take an English class, so they tended to not like books nor reading — and certainly they tended to not like me very much, probably in no small part for making them read books, let alone write essays. Anyway in my experience, Maus is THE book that could get through to anyone, despite everything, kinda no matter what.)

It's like that's the typification of a fatherly figure that exists at the top of all possible dominance hierarchies. I guess that'd be a good way to describe it, and, but, it's not a king per se, when you go to burger king, it's the instantiation of an individual as necessarily being the embodiment of the transcendent ideal of a king. It's a king as such. The typified aspect of kingship as such is inexorably tied up with the word. And what does a typified father figure do? Well he provides, doesn't he? He provides food, and shelter, and burgers. Well yeah, that's bloody well right, he's a king who provides burgers, exactly! You know, you know, when Alexander Solzhenitzyn was in the gulags, he thought about food a lot.
