I could see her having Alya do something to disrupt the tournament. Her next match will be one to keep an eye on.” “Are any of the other matches potential areas for her to disrupt?” Eduards asks. “But we are dealing with a mad scientist. They don’t make sensible plans. They hardly ever make plans to begin with. So it remains best to find her and keep tabs on her as soon as possible.” Eduards nods. “Understood. I will head out and continue searching.” As Eduards leaves, a different meeting takes place in the other VIP box. Despite there being no doors, no windows, no openings, no cracks for anyone to pass through, someone did. “How exactly did you get in here?” Darmenzi asks. They have a bemused smile on their reptilian face. They tap the wall with their crystal staff. “These walls are sealed with magic. Part of the agreement for Duth to even let me be here.” “It’s simple,” Dr. Fara said. She took a seat on air. “I just turned around the molecules and entered through the space between them. Darmenzi nods. “Makes sense. And you say you wish for me to destroy this tournament?” “Yes!” Fara stands up, fists raised. “Destroy these fools who dare not give me victory!” “Rain hellfire upon them?” “Yes!” “Drown them in flooding acid?” “Yes!” “Twist them inside-out until they no longer know which way is out?” “Yes!” Darmenzi shakes their head. “My dear doctor, I’m afraid I’m only here to watch. Why, watching bugs scramble for others’ entertainment is one of my favorite pastimes. Besides”—They grin sharp teeth and lean towards Fara, arm leaning on the armrest and one leg crossing the other—“you don’t need my assistance to cause mayhem and destruction.” They stare at her, eyes burning. “I’ve seen your work. You’re phenomenal at causing chaos and ruining lives. Why don’t you show me that you’re worthy of taking the winner’s spot?”

Two years ago: the highlight of my career as an Uber driver in a college town
Top tier Uber passenger last night. She said her slurred goodbyes to her friends, got in my car alone, dropped her fries all over the place, and passed slap out. I could not get her out of my car at her dorm despite trying for a WHILE. I found a few of her sorority sisters and one of them went to get her dorm floor RA. We tried everything. A timer. An offer of Taco Bell. An offer of more alcohol (not to be followed up on). Finally, she said “I’ll only get out of the car for the hottest man alive.” RA: “Who’s that?” “Patrick DEMPSEY, GOD.” RA: “he doesn’t live in Oxford, honey! Please get out of this lady‘s car so she can get some more girls home!” Nothing. Right back to sleep. Me: “I actually took an acting class with Patrick when I was at UCLA and we’ve stayed in touch. I could maybe call him!” Lazarus the sorority girl rose from the dead and stared at me. Her sisters and RA used the momentum to coax her out of my car. I scooped the fries out of the car, sprayed a little lavender stuff to cover the fry smell, and laughed for the rest of my shift.

Meanwhile, former network executives are telling The New York Post that "It's highly unusual for a news executive to have six bodyguards." Oh is it! Weiss is such a shambolic embarrassment, actually successful right-wing rags are calling their sources so they can point and laugh at her in public. It's impossible to overstate how deeply embarrassing she is and how transparent this effort to create a Fox News competitor is.

With Wren holding on they’re pulled to the ground and slide towards the hole with her. Revasa glances back for a second before returning to Wren. “Ssstay focusssed, Wren. Concentrate sssolely on me, and hold on to me with all your might.” “Hold on,” Wren mumbles. “Yesss,” Revasa says as the two of them slide closer and closer to the hole. “Give in to my ssspell and ssslip deep into a trance. A focusssed trance, focusssed on me, my eyes, holding your grip on me.” Wren’s eyelids waver up and down as Revasa’s hypnosis sinks into their mind. More of Revasa falls into the hole, only a meter left, half a meter, only her head. Wren feels a sharp, ringing splash through their head and they smile in a trance the moment before Revasa slips from their grasp and into the hole. Wren lays on the ground motionless as the hole closes. “Hey, look at that!” I announce. “Revasa did it, she hypnotized Wren in the final seconds!” A portal opens above the ground and Fara and Revasa fall out of it, Revasa tangled around Fara as the mad scientist holds the snake’s gaping maw at bay. She shoves Revasa away and stabs at her with a twisted stardust knife, and the snake dodges. “Hey, you can stop fighting,” I say. “Revasa won. She hypnotized Wren.” “Not if I kill her first!” Fara shouts, stabbing at Revasa. “I’ll kill you first!” Revasa says. She snaps her jaw at Fara but the mad scientist phases away to dodge it. I sigh. “Top, can you get in there?” “Yahoo!” Top screams. They fly towards the fray like a pinball, bouncing off trees until they collide with the fighting pair, knocking Fara out of Revasa’s tail and to the ground. They point at Fara. “You’re out of the tournament!” They point at Revasa. “You’re in the tournament, unless you kill someone!” They point at Wren. “You’re blank right now!” They point at Fara. “You get a consolation prize!” “And what might that be, pray tell?” Fara asks. “Well, most of the consolation prizes are just a pizza,” I say. “I even promised to eat no more than a quarter of it,” Top says. “In your case, though, I probably will actually get to writing more of the dating series about you after I finish the Jb story,” I say. “Fine.” Fara stands up and dusts herself off. “I’m still going to destroy this tournament, though.” “Oh, fine, that’s fine,” I say. “Just know that might delay more of your dating series.” “But you will write it, yes?” Fara asks. “Yeah.” “Good.” She raises her hands and screams, “I will destroy you all!” before running off and laughing like a ticklish maniac. During that conversation Revasa wrapped a few loops of her tail around Wren. She pulls them to her wide-open mouth. Top jumps on Revasa’s head. “No! I said no killing anyone!” “I’m not killing them,” Revasa says, “I’m merely going to eat them.” “That too. Go, go, get out of here. I’ll cook you a reward meal.” “I don’t want sssomething cooked, I want a live meal.” “Then I’ll get you a live meal,” Top says. “How does a panther sound?” Revasa drops Wren. “I’ll take that, certainly.” “I’ll be in after I take care of our friend here.” She slithers back to her dwelling room while Top carries the still Wren to detox.

This filter_out() approach looks amazing. More than half the time I use filter(), I'm actually trying to get rid of rows rather than keep them. The NA issue with filter() has caused problems for me more than once (because it took me a while to figure out each time it was an NA issue).

Scourge's hand tightens around his throat to the point of discomfort. Sonic claws at his wrist, purposefully digging his fingers into the wounds from their earlier fight until Scourge hisses and eases up. "Look who suddenly decided to fight back," he growls, "What, am I too much t' handle after all?" Sonic rolls his eyes. "Please. If I wanted to fight back, you'd be gone." "That so?" Scourge chuckles and grinds into him, slow and filthy. "How long've you wanted me for, Blue? Ages?" He leans in, breathes the next words hot against his cheek. "Or are you just such a slut that any dick will do to fill yer hole?" Thing is, Sonic has been considering this for a while now. Scourge has a reputation as a playboy; Sonic is curious to see just how much of that is true. But while the dirty talk is admittedly doing it for him, the rest of Scourge's performance has been decidedly lackluster. Maybe Sonic should have expected this, but Scourge is as selfish a fuck as he is a person. He hasn't made any effort to look for Sonic's sweet spots, has barely touched his dick, and seems to be avoiding his prostate like it'll grow teeth and bite him. Honestly, the fight beforehand was more stimulating than this. "I usually prefer my dicks attached to somebody more competent than you," Sonic says, delighting in the annoyed growl that passes Scourges lips. He uses looking over his shoulder as an excuse to arch his back, hoping the change in angle will do something for him—but no such luck. "Aren't you supposed to be good at this?" Scourge's hips stutter. Sonic doesn't know whether it's from anger or if he gets off to being talked down to and he frankly doesn't care. If Scourge doesn't step up his game in the next few seconds, he's taking matters into his own hands. "C'mon," he taunts, "Fuck me like you mean it." At that, Scourge finally picks up the pace to something more befitting two creatures with super speed, pounding into him hard and fast. "'S this what you wanted? For me t' fuck you so good you won't be able to walk tomorrow?" He keeps talking, growling filthy things into Sonic's ears. He's arrogant, brash and loud in a way that Sonic would usually be into if he had any actual skill to back it up. Sonic lets it go on for another half minute or so before he gets fed up, grabbing Scourge's wrist and tearing his hand from his throat. He wrenches it up and out of the way, twisting his upper body around in such a way that he can throw his leg in the air and move it between them, managing to turn around while keeping Scourge inside him. It's a maneuver that took ages to master, but Scourge doesn't seem to appreciate it, too busy whining in pain at the way Sonic's fingers dig harshly into his wounds. "Don't be a baby," Sonic huffs. Scourge's eyes flash with defiance, but he doesn't actually do anything, so Sonic hooks a leg around his knee and pulls, taking them both down to the ground. Scourge's back hits dirt with a heavy thump. Sonic lands more gracefully, settling in Scourge's lap like it's a throne. He does a kegel mostly to show off, clenching the muscles in his ass individually around Scourge's dick and watching the way his pupils contract and expand. Sonic smirks. "Let me show you how it's really done."

But apparently l'm that, and I'm a CPT-ologist and an E&M-codeologist. In the military, we never used any of those. Suddenly I had to be an expert on all of that and it was just like, that's not what I got into medicine for, to learn all this nonsense... Let me do the diagnosing and treating..." Insurance utilization review impedes patient-centered care "I'd rather just make the decisions based on the medical care l'm providing and the patient in front of me. So the prior authorizations, these peer-to-peer requests too...l did a peer-to-peer recently but to get the peer-to-peer started took me like 20 min on the phone, and it turns out that the number I had been given was actually not right. And there was a third-party group managing the peer-to-peer requests... I mean, I spoke to 3 different operators... and then, when I finally was able to access the other physician to do the peer-to-peer request, it was cursory and useless, and did not inspire confidence... It was clear to me that the entire peer-to-peer exercise was administrative burden to alienate my patients from medical care that they were entitled to." Corporatized systems take advantage of physicians' professionalism "[The patient] may not be able to afford the bandaid that [they] have to go and buy out of pocket from the drugstore. So, trying to find ways to help patients do that. I was expected to do all that in 15 min. It's undoable ... Myself and every other provider end up working 2 hours over. Then you document after that, and it's exhausting, it's unsustainable. ! would often not be able to go to the bathroom. I was eating and charting when I had a baby. I was calling patients while pumping, and they would be like, "What's that noise in the background?" I was like, "Oh, it's nothing. It's a machine in the background. Don't worry about it." It was unsustainable, and I really do think ... the system takes advantage of the professionalism of the docs." Feelings of guilt and complicity from 'overfunctioning' "I almost feel this sense of complicity in taking part in the system that ... doesn't feel very patient-centered ... now that the Ultimate books are ending I’ll have no excuse not to sit down and actually read the stack through on this remarkable achievement. there’s a chance this could be remembered as the most influential series of this era. it’s already one of the best looking Marvel books in history. respect.

I have been struggling to figure out how I feel about Geese. When 3D Country dropped, I was mostly impressed by its unique take on the country aesthetic, but it never quite got its claws into me the way it did for others. When Cameron Winter dropped Heavy Metal late last year, I took it as an opportunity to really try and figure out what I had been missing. Truthfully, Heavy Metal’s more intimate approach resonated with me a lot more, and it would have probably ranked high on my list of best 2024 records had it not dropped so late in the year. In late September, Geese returned in full with Getting Killed, which I can best describe as being trapped in the Willy Wonka tunnel for 45 minutes. Winter’s lyrics read like a man crashing out over his breakup in real time. He’s antagonistic towards his former lover on “Cobra” while also yearning for her. He follows up on this situation during “Au pays du cocaine” where he’s willing to put himself in an obviously unhealthy situation for her: “Baby, you can stay with me and nobody would care / You can stay with me and just pretend I’m not there”. He’s fighting with his ex-lover’s new partner on “Half-Real” but eventually concedes and begs to be spared from his anguish: “I've got half a mind / To just pay for the lobotomy / And tell 'em, ‘Get rid of the bad times / And get rid of the good times too’”. He spends much of the first two thirds in anguish over this breakup, and eventually tries to find god to bring him out of turmoil. He attempts to reform his life in devotion to God on “Bow Down”, but an angel challenges him: “She said ‘You don't know what it's like / To bow down to Maria's dead bones’”. Winter speaks to several different deceased figures on the closing track, “Long Island City Here I Come” looking for guidance in his art and receiving hard truths in return: "A masterpiece belongs to the dead / There are microphones under your bed / And there's footage that will prove us both wrong". Here, Long Island City is a metaphor for the afterlife, and he ends the song by describing a handful of characters that either fight against, or embrace their own death. Winter ultimately chooses to embrace his. For how conceptual the album can feel, it occasionally detours into some other subject matter. “100 Horses” is an absurdist anti-war track featuring some of the most striking lines on the album: “He said that I would never smile again / But not to worry / For all people stop smiling / Once they get what they've been begging for”. I’m also moved by “Islands Of Men”, where Winter tries to convince a closeted trans woman to embrace who she truly is. I actually had no idea Geese had a transfem guitarist, and it’s sweet that he would include a track that would feel especially personal to her and the trans Geese fans.
