#tech+humanities
I managed to miss an entire discourse about humanities and tech. Highly recommend quitting social media and returning to RSS. kyefox.com/follow-by-rss/

Tech bros not beating the “desperately need to take some humanities courses so they can have any semblance of media literacy” allegations
Like come tf on worsties, it’s literally spelled out in the tweet. This isn’t even subtext

as the years pile up I see more and more evidence to support my hypothesis that tech people all fucked off in their humanities classes and as a result the only thing they get from all the sci-fi they consume is "wow wouldn't that be cool"

tech people really need to be required to take a lot more social sciences / humanities classes
maybe you should... think about how society works a little bit before you get to just crank out inventions and unleash them on the world...

If they understood people (or wanted to), they’d have gone into the arts/humanities or social sciences, not tech.

Remember the modern "tech" elite largely ARE trained in the Humanities, at least nominally. Both Peter Thiel and Alex Karp were Philosophy majors. They are investors: what they have "created" is companies, not technologies.

It's the incuriosity that's the problem. Plus the sociopathy.

Me in 2005: Why does this tech school make me take so many humanities and ethics courses for a CS degree?
Me in 2025: Oooohhhhhhh

Lotsa bangers in this thread.

And a reminder that: unregulated capitalism and associated power is the problem, not the tech.
Also, tech bros and their tech bro critics don't know and are incurious about how society works. Need better grounding in history and humanities.
Next up on my reading list.

…I am already regretting this choice.

I will keep banging on about this: the wholesale devaluing of the Arts & Humanities in western society has given us science and tech devoid of critical thinking.

Desperately need to send every tech bro to a Gulag where they all get taught humanities and liberal arts before they destroy the world.
"Torment Nexus" comes from this tweet and is often used now to describe the kind of negative experiences you can have with social networks, like getting dogpiled or harassed or being pushed into conflict

nah it has to go further than that, a lot of tech CEOs don't even have college degrees, we have to regulate the industry to ban anyone from working in it that DOESN'T have a humanities education

Learning requires attention, in any format.

Turning the humanities into a combination of kindergarten and TikTok won’t bring about a new era in education, it will lead to the death of the humanities.

Which is what most tech companies want.

the way we have let a bunch of military & tech-oriented profiteers control the definition of the humanities for decades means I spend literally 3+ class days telling my students “a literary theory does the same thing a scientific theory does” and they nod and say “yes, literary theory is opinion”

This book is a good example of why the humanities matter, and in fact matter more than ever. (Though it's not like the *only* job of the humanities is to critique and contextualize random tech junk; but it is something it's especially valuable for, and it's spent a while building up to this moment.)

when Peter Thiel pays people to skip college it’s all about getting tech people to NOT learn anything about the humanities.

Thiel wants tech workers to have his own middle-school level stunted understanding of things like Tolkien. And when they skip college they are not exposed to different ideas.
AI chip startup backed by Antichrist aficionado Peter Thiel and In-Q-Tel (CIA venture capital) raises $100 million.

Experts are skeptical it will pan out. But don’t worry: The founder is not an expert and skipped college for a Thiel Fellowship.

Tech bro fascists hate the Humanities for many reasons
If you need to explain to an idiot why Tolkien would have despised these goons, I have already grabbed a picture of the relevant passage (and I doubt I was the first):

Tech bros understand quite literally nothing about art or literature or much of anything, really.

Take literally 1 humanities class ever.
I’m really starting to suspect that most of the tech bros haven’t actually read Tolkien, as they certainly don’t understand it.

The gentle hobbits save the “hard men” of Gondor, largely through compassion and selflessness. Not the other way around. The Christian parable is barely hidden!

Seeing the Musk quote re:Tolkien and England is just so humorous. All these right wingers — and especially right wing tech bros — are just constantly underlining that yes, the humanities are actually needed. We’ve got an entire generation with no reading comprehension skills, and too much money.
