Hastily checking my posts for exclamation marks, in fear that my misanthropy might be mistaken for over-emotional girlishness.

Misanthropy makes me sick. Cynicism makes me sick. Apathy makes me sick. Emotional unavailability as a personality trait makes me sick.

we’ve let shitty people launder genuine misanthropy as “introversion” for too damn long. if you, in general, dislike interacting with your fellow man, that’s a YOU problem!

sure they're racist as fuck, and misogynist, homophobic, all the other fascist "virtues", but at the core is an even darker impulse, a total misanthropy so all encompassing that they want to use their endless wealth to detach from and destroy humanity entirely

I know I’m close to my period, but maybe my suddenly intense feelings of misanthropy and desire for self-isolation are unrelated this time.

Make sure to install your Perplexity browser so WaPo can recoup their influence by forcing yet more shitty, data-leaking, parasitic software into your life. In case you somehow missed their limp reporting and general misanthropy

This is cynicism.

People "come to the left" from material necessity too.

Imagining you know why people do things is the height of arrogance and betrays a nasty misanthropy.

This is unnecessary now. Build the left with inclusivity, or at least gatekeep with clear reasoning.

I think they'd have been better off not slapping the CREEPSHOW name on this. The stories about the vengeful dime store Indian and the deadly sentient oil spill are decent enough, but the comic book-y visual style and gleeful nastiness/misanthropy that make the original so distinctive are missing.

This is not the time for edgy misanthropy and chic ennui. This is the time to tap into your capacity to dream, to create, to build.

This is not something that can be done alone. Reach out, and find people who want what you want. Build with them.

W and Reagan were big picture disasters but one on one people who met them liked them! It's the whole "have a beer" thing. And misanthropy has a long tail.

I actually think the mini-series is a big improvement on the book, because it excises a lot of the weird racism, homophobia, misogyny and general misanthropy of the original novel (as in, yes the characters in the story are bigots, but you can really tell Simmons is as well)

It's wild the misogyny has morphed into straight up misanthropy for them. They reject everyone's humanity, even their own! Their supposed hopes and dreams sound like they're reciting a checklist: make money, get married, have kids. The line about not feeling worthy of romance hammered that in for me

Thought-provoking essay that I agree with - until the end.
We are not the enemy (that feeds into defeatist misanthropy). We are the solution: we have the power to change ourselves, and that power is contagious.

We are more likely to advance human dignity and ecological sustainability if we focus less on “Why are those people so bad?” and more on “What forces shaped this outcome?”

2/3 Things got darker as his writing career progressed, not least because of the trauma of his marital life and his developing cultivated misanthropy. Darkness and humour combine typically in this paragraph from 'A Handful of Dust', which I think will stand as his major novel. Poor dog!
