Excited to share our latest work with @albertomarina.bsky.social and @avigdoreldar.bsky.social labs, where we decipher the mechanism by which SPβ-like phages sense the SOS response to control the lysis–lysogeny switch. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I will be defending on Dec 8th at 1pm Eastern Time! I will be sharing both published and new work. If filamentous phages, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, evolution, and active lysogeny sound cool:

It is hybrid, and the zoom link info can be found on the webpage. 🔗

Our latest work reveals that arbitrium phages cross-communicate across species! These tiny viruses “listen” to signals from others, coordinating lysis-lysogeny decisions across species.
Original idea from @albertomarina.bsky.social and, as usual, he was right.

Phages communicate across species to shape microbial ecosystems
Arbitrium is a communication system that helps bacteriophages decide between lysis and lysogeny via secreted peptides. In arbitrium, the AimP peptide binds its cognate AimR receptor to repress aimX ex...

Good morning Phage [Ph]ans! I'm so stoked to share my first preprint with the @jrpenades.bsky.social lab! We show that phages can use the arbitrium system to crosstalk and regulate lysis-lysogeny, which has huge implications in how phages shape microbial communities!

They isolated the MulchMansion-MulchRoom system, relatives of the MindFlayer-MiniFlayer system. Their satellite (MulchRoom) is temperate, as you would expect from a satellite (it should be able to lay dormant until the helper enters the host). Instead, MiniFlayer lacks the lysogeny module. [4/n]

Hard to consider classical pseudo-lysogeny, since bacteria were grown to be sequenced and purely non-replicative phages should have been washed out. And they do not seem to be phage-plasmids. This work suggests virulent phages may persist for some time in small clonal non-structured populations.

2/ Lwoff's discovery built on his work in the early 1950s to understand lysogeny. This is when some genes of some viruses, bacteriophages (phage), get incorporated into the genetic material of a bacteria but remain latent until the formation of a new phage triggered by a particular event.

Haha I read your message and then immediately bumped into my colleague Heather Allison (temperate phage expert)... She says she has seen everything — expressed by their own promoters during lysogeny, modulated by genomic location (controlled by host), and expressed during lytic phase.

Tomorrow would have been the 88th birthday of molecular biologist Maharani Chakravorty, who worked in the fields of protein synthesis, unicellular metabolism, and the biochemistry of cell lysogeny. She passed away in 2015.
