#paleoctober2025 day 19 : Asterophyllites equisetiformis !
Fossil leaves such as these are super abundant in Europe during the Carboniferous and belonged to horsetails relatives that could reach tree-like sizes
And this time, I'm gonna talk a bit more about paleobotany so if you want, read below !⬇️

Moving on, the next area featured an expansive, walk-through diorama of a Carboniferous coal forest, complete with a giant Arthropleura for visitors to stomp on. The supplementary display of local fossils from Mazon Creek hid fossils in drawers that visitors could look through (few did).

Revisited an odd horsetail at Den of Maidencraig LNR, Aberdeen, which I think is shore horsetail, the hybrid of water and common horsetails. Like a long-branched common horsetail but with stems smoother, compressible due to a large central hollow and protruding cortex when pulled apart lengthways.

What I think is a partial Calamites fossil in a piece of sandstone. Calamites were plants similar to modern Horsetails but much larger in scale. They grew in the tropical swampy conditions that prevailed on this part of the earths surface over 300 million years ago.

Today's volunteering was near my house, so consequently, my lunch view was my front yard. So here's something cool I saw 10 minutes before lunch.

little to no development called Entisol. these soils are characteristic to a Taiga biome, also known as a Boreal Forest. horsetails, cycads, and conifers cover the ground and many of the animals that live here give the locality that the Eumerella Formation is a part of its name, Dinosaur Cove, two-

Love 25 foot tall horsetails!
For #FossilFriday, here's a restoration of the possible life appearance of #Equisetites arenaceus, from the Early Late Triassic of Europe; a horsetail with stems up to 25cm across! I have more information about this on my patreon: www.patreon.com/posts/107353...

I wouldn't advocate having horsetails on an allotment either. When I took on mine I had the extra challenge of lots of layers of carpets. Horsetail roots made long, tough strands between the layers. I tried growing clover but it decided to take over so I've hacked it back!
