#data-centric
This is a bit of a US-centric point: modern UK cars haven't gone full Yanktank and face much stricter pedestrian safety standards than US cars, and this is reflected in both countries' injury and fatality data

no big deal, the eta when I got in the car was still 15 minutes before my train arrives. good thing your data-centric app forgot to account for traffic. on the capital beltway.

I have many thoughts and opinions about my two data-centric university degree programs. What questions do you have? Do you have "data" degrees? Did you get your degree before "data" was a thing? Did you skip the degree? What was your experience?

And then there's that whole thing about AI data centers which I suspect is the reason tech bros, like Bill Gates notably, are shifting their positions on climate change to an innovation centric model.
Because the AI beast needs all the electrons.

AI brings soaring emissions for Google and Microsoft, a major contributor to climate change
The tech giants both report surges in greenhouse gas emissions as they double-down on adding artificial intelligence to all of their products.

And just in case people want to know how we’re doing it:
- minimal data tracking (and I mean minimal)
- little/no algorithm on feeds
- friends-first, privacy-centric foundation
- overall ethos of «let’s build an app that people are happy spending 5-10 mins per day on, and then go live your life»

Cataloging is the data of humanistic enterprise. It enables discovery, access, inventory, and fuels data centric projects. Cataloging is one of the activities that differentiates libraries from warehouses. Simply: if it's not described, in a real sense, it doesn't exist.

Our new review paper about Pathway-Centric PTM Data Analysis is out this week in #Proteomics!
We cover databases, enrichment tools, software for pathway reconstruction, and full-fledged platforms that help to interpret high-throughput PTM datasets.
Check it out here: doi.org/10.1002/pmic...
Computational Approaches for Pathway‐Centric Analysis of Protein Post‐Translational Modifications
Protein function is dynamically modulated by post-translational modifications (PTMs). Many different types of PTMs can nowadays be identified and quantified at a large scale using mass spectrometry. ...

Gene-centric metagenomic analyses reveal microbiome functional insights into diseases
The microbiome encodes millions of genes; however, understanding their role in human health remains challenging. Here, we developed MetaGEAR, a gene-centric analysis framework for metagenomic data. Me...

All else equal — ceteris paribus, as the economists say — if you were to just grab that expensive watch from the jewelry store counter and walk out the door, you'd be better off.

Only all else would not be equal.

Lots of data-centric political punditry is basically "grab the watch".

Fantastic to see the commitment to making a truly bold change here! Oxford Street needs to be a world-class experiential destination. Any massive urban change requires a leap of faith, but focusing on the people-centric data makes the long-term case undeniable.

Which leaves the datacenter monstrosities only really useful for training, not inference. So spending billions and gigawatts on inference-centric data center deployment is just sheer lunacy even by the sheer lunacy of the AI bubble!

Precisely what they did with the RTO mandate. Internal surveys of staff and leadership OVERWHELMINGLY wanted to maintain a remote work-centric policy but Bruce scuttled the data and did the bidding of his wealthy overlords. Again.

A lot of generative AI in the present context boils down to:
1. Providing concrete mechanisms for devaluing labor
2. Obscuring and justifying the costs, waste, and theft required by data-centric ecosystems

Idk where this industry survey was conducted but I have a strong suspicion that it was very US centric, which would make this not a universal generational issue but a national one.

I’d love to see the data though.
A TikTok from this film industry account was posted about how an industry survey of Gen Z media consumers found that a near supermajority of young people thought television and cinema had too much sexual content. These were the comments.

Postwar consumerism was customer-centric. The customer was always right. Now it's 'pay more or we'll bombard you with unwanted ads, spy on you, and sell your data'. It's a protection racket that exploits moribund ideas about brand prestige. Customers are just marks for big tech now. Data livestock.

This is the most exciting time ever to be working in data, and I'm not talking about AI.

3 years ago, I wrote a database-centric guide in my book for analyzing the full 92 million record 1910 Census.

Now, with #rstats and @duckdb?

Analyze those 92 million rows in seconds.
