#cypherpunks
"To early cypherpunks, privacy wasn’t marketing. It was the foundation of financial freedom. Over a decade later, the appeal is returning for a different reason. In a world of AI-enhanced surveillance and constant data collection, anonymity is being re-framed not as secrecy, but as self-protection."
Crypto’s Anti-Surveillance Boom: Zcash, Monero and the Return of Anonymity

Privacy coins are outperforming as traders turn away from ETFs and transparent ledgers, reviving crypto’s oldest idea: digital cash that can move freely, without surveillance.

I try not to spend my energy online being a hater, but the whole farcaster / lens potemkin crypto social stuff has deserved some dedicated hating ever since atproto showed how much better shit can be. I don't think even a dozen people on farcaster are cypherpunks

v funny the biggest political success cypherpunks achieved was electing this fucking guy

The cypherpunks were/are trying!

But… it turns out it’s *very* hard to do anything involving actual payment like that, especially without attracting an ecosystem of weird investor scam cult finance bros, like black mould on damp walls. I’m not sure tech can solve every problem. :/

So make that late 80s for the start. Had overlap with cypherpunks, libertarians, anarcho-capitalists.

"if not for those damn meddling cypherpunks and their paranoid concerns (which all came true) we'd have more privacy and freedom now" is sure a Take

It's great that instances like Blacksky or Northsky exist for minorities.

But I'm missing a home for my minority: the cypherpunks, libertarians, and voluntarists who see decentralization not as an end-goal, but as the foundation for building entirely parallel economic and social structures.

This. FTX were, quite literally, Extropia’s Children. Has anyone checked to see if his parents were on cypherpunks?

Back in the 00s, one of the Chaos Computer Club crew died climbing on K2 or maybe Annapurna. Not someone I knew, think his first name was Jan, and my Cypherpunks archives would require a lot of rebuilding to find his name.
Len Sassaman knew him.

I was about to say the cypherpunks disagree but even those two manifestos are over 500 words. Not that Tim May was known for his brevity.
I’m sorry but 262 words is not a manifesto. It’s a statement. Maybe a communique. Not a manifesto.

Crypto is largely a mix of cypherpunks, gambling addicts, and scammers.

The cypherpunks hate the scammers and roll our eyes at the gambling addicts just as much as the haters do, but you're going to need our help to navigate the authoritarian hellscape to come.

Similarly to @dragqueen.racing, I've been around the Cypherpunks and private currency systems since before 1990, and most of the papers claims are invalid or at best highly optimistic, except the ones about making the politically-incorrect-drug trade safer and more efficient.

Why tf do you actually care about "chat control" ? The cypherpunks solved this with weapons grade encryption in the 70s

They can't stop you, no matter what laws they make.

No (and I've been around since the Cypherpunks worked on its predecessors.)
It's digital tokens, secured by math, that some people think are useful for gambling or occasionally accept in trade.
