There's a reference implementation in Rust with tools for creating and validating attestations. The blog post at ngerakines.leaflet.pub/3m3idxul5hc2r walks through practical examples and shows how to use the atproto-attestation-sign and verify programs.

This framework builds on the cryptographic foundation for trust in the ATProtocol ecosystem. By keeping the core spec minimal while allowing application-level extensibility, we get both security and flexibility. Applications can define their own attestation types and semantics.

Security comes from repository binding in CID creation. Each attestation is cryptographically tied to the specific repo containing the record, which prevents replay attacks. An attacker can't just copy your signed record elsewhere because the CID would change.

This has been a long time coming. When I launched at://work earlier (atwork.place), one feature I wanted was professional endorsements that actually mean something. The attestation spec makes this possible through remote attestations that are revocable and truly owned.

For anyone doing this themselves... I did expedite it (ends up costing $242.05 for book and card), I did include the Orr v. Trump attestation: travel.state.gov/content/dam/..., and I did mail it overnight to the Philadelphia address (as the form mandates).

I do wonder if there's an atproto issue with the focus on identity as the 'actor'
would love to see some attestation info external to the id like the PDS w/'has a verified email', 'is X days old', or appviews 'just saw this account/pds combo today' and the ability to label unfaithful PDSs/appviews
