#Postdoc!
I did my undergrad there 1999-2003, and then a postdoc 2016-2020. The change in demographics between if the intensive recruiting of foreign students was so stark.

Not a great time if you need US federal STEM grants … or are a Chinese national student/postdoc in the US
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

How many profs in major PhD granting science departments have *not* advised even 1 Chinese student or Chinese postdoc in the last five years 😧?

Massive cuts to American science funding are already conceding leadership to China in many areas. Ending all collaborations with Chinese scientists and cutting funding to any American scientist who had a Chinese student or postdoc in the last 5 years would be unbelievably destructive to the US. 💔😢

I bring the same notebook whenever I testify in court: a gift from my former students when I left my old job. One of those student is now my postdoc. Today she attended court with me as I took her gift from our old lives to the stand.

New preprint from my postdoc work! Using fluorescent imaging, scRNA-seq, and ATAC-seq of mouse, anole, and chicken embryos, we provide evidence that birds have co-opted vascular smooth muscle to generate the pulmonary smooth muscle in their lungs. More on this later!

I lived there from 2018-2020 for a postdoc, and compared to the East Coast it was a revelation. On par with my parent's farm in rural Kentucky, and I lived pretty much in the middle of the city.

Meet @skoslov.bsky.social, a postdoc who studies a very mysterious part of the human brain: posterior cingulate cortex. Seth records from (get this!) human neurons as people make decisions and perform memory taks. He has deeply interesting insights & results - I recommended this follow!
