Shout out to Up-N-Smoke BBQ in Ironwood, MI for serving us up all this 🔥!! Finally another reason to hit up that part of the UP, other than for a lil Mary Jane.

Everything was 🤌🏽, especially the mac and cheese, collard greens, cornbread and brisket. 🤤

Weird how things cost different depending on geographic area or what stores one can even go-to... Even the generic Mac & Cheese box Is nowhere close to a $1 at any place I've been too

Like, the way some people are about mac and cheese, is the way I am about Japanese curry, so maybe it's legit just a comfort food thing?

But I've also seen Japanese curry become an INSTANT comfort food for people who've never had it before so...?

You know what. I'm just going to come out and say it. I know it's going to piss people off, but this is a hill I am prepared to sustain injury on.

I do NOT get why mac and cheese is such a big deal in some places. And I've had good mac and cheese! Is it a comfort food thing or something?

Tell y’all what. This took a lot of time to put together but I loved every minute of it. I’m not a mac & cheese guy but what I made tonight was something I’d eat bowls of. I got to give someone their first ever bite of collard greens & they loved it but I feel I make great greens.
Our plates for tonight and what the pans of mac & cheese, collard greens, and cornbread looked like.

Everyone is all like “don’t give boxed Mac and cheese because it’s useless without butter or milk”

And I’m like “tell me you’ve never been poor without telling me you have never been poor!”

you can just use water and no it’s not as good but it’s something.

Also you can make just the pasta.

That would feed you for two hotdogs and a box of Mac is equal to two meals if not 3 so you get a box of generic Mac and cheese for every two dogs total price $15 and that will get you through a week and a half. That's $45 a month and it keeps you full. It's not nutritious but no one but you .....

No one who is poor except you is gonna do all that math. They are gonna look at the prices of food and say nope to the $3 cans of tuna that you might get 2 sandwiches out of and say nope and go straight for whatever they know is cheap. Box of Mac cheese $1 or less package of hotdogs $5 for 20 dogs

Also cauliflower is not good for folks with IBS. However my kid with gluten sensitivity loves frozen cauliflower with cheese - a great alternative to regular Mac & Cheese.

Made vegan mac & cheese for the first time. The recipe I kind of followed mentioned hot sauce and worcestershire sauce. I was hesitant to add a lot but I did try it out...not bad.

Nah you just add water. Trust me it's not ideal. Then you add a package of hotdogs. As for the price I mentioned that was years ago and the price hasn't gone up much since. Also the generic version of Kraft Mac and cheese are $1 or less. Adding hotdogs to the mix makes it so you can feed more people

I remember eating a lot of Mac and cheese and hotdogs as a kid because it was cheap. Could feed a family of 6 on a couple boxes of Mac and cheese and a package of hotdogs and all it cost you was a couple dollars. Even now it's a cheap meal. Throw in some frozen peas and your golden

Sadly, it's been this way forever. In Iowa they are now restricting sweets on ebt. Please don't tell me the orange mac and cheese box is any healthier. 🙄🙄🙄

Exactly. Pasta is cheap. We had lots of hot dishes, spaghetti , Mac and cheese. And all I could afford was canned veggies for my kids. You learn to make do. Yes, I used to get food stamps. My spouse left me and I didn't even have a car. I pulled out of poverty later and now grow my own veggies.

Plus, SNAP benefits are generally so low that people just can't buy enough fresh produce or whatever the "healthy" food supposedly is. $80 worth of mac & cheese or cheap frozen pizza goes a lot farther for a month than $80 worth of lettuce, tomatoes, and apples.
