1830s is admittedly a guess on my part, based on it being depicted in a painting by Paul Kane in the 1840s and an earlier similar example from the Great Lakes. I personally can’t speak to the distinction in its origin, was just going with GRASAC. grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca?p=377
