@ww2historygal.bsky.social There's nothing funny about what's happening in Jamaica and the Caribbean right now, best wishes and hope to all.
However...headlines like 'Melissa Wreaks Havoc' and 'Is Melissa a threat to the US?' have caused one (yep, showing off some Englishness) to giggle a little.

Although I'd argue that particular album is about staking out "Anti Englishness" as a specifically English ideological position rather than "reclaiming" Englishness as a progressive force.

The Libertines' "Time for Heroes" is the last serious cultural attempt to build a progressive notion of "Englishness".

I still find it highly amusing that, at this point, edgy American rock star Michael Stipe (twat, talented, but a twat) was warning edgy American rock star Courtney Love (then getting off smack) that Alan Partridge was bad news. My Northern Englishness really connects with that.

I think you're right. A return to the EU SM would have the biggest impact but I think an english parliament for england is a good idea.
@fotoole.bsky.social is worth a follow on this but he spotted the rise in "englishness" above and beyond flagging & shouting at hotels.

Fintan O Toole's missive in todays Irish Times is well worth a read, I hope it gets licensed to english newspapers.
He discusses the buyers remorse over brexit: yet the rise in support for farage.

btw @nickharkaway.com I'm talking about the Englishness we inherit from the writers that defined it, not the actual sons of those writers!

Brilliant and illuminating thread, so much of which I identify with! I'm struck that the performative power dynamic of Englishness (here with costume) is best illuminated by outsiders - and thus the next generation of that dynamic reflects not unselfconscious ease but analysis, wariness and anxiety.
Inevitably fascinating thread on a particular strand of modern tailoring and its place in American political life.
To which I can add a little contrast if you want it…

This process is done using a computer-aided design tool. After your pattern has been made, the panels are cut and the garment is entirely machine sewn. While the company superficially offers a full handmade bespoke service, the price is so prohibitive, they're effectively made-to-measure service.

It may need better framing, but I noticed this years ago in the data with UKIP.
The Englishness/Britishness vs Welshness/Scottishness variables are *really* quite predictive of Rad Right voting.
But part of what makes it mucky is that it's a slightly different pattern in England/Wales/Scotland.

this is not because englishness is good but because 28 days was such an unequivocal indictment of the english national identity that the critique is a load-bearing feature of the universe

I consider myself Welsh and English, not British. But British is a thing. And we feel we have to assert our cultural identity now it feels under threat all the time. Especially Englishness, which is having identity crisis.

But that’s the point. English people don’t want the Englishness taken out of England by wave after wave of people that don’t speak English or want to assimilate to the English way of life. Same as in America, whites don’t want to live near blacks and blacks don’t to live near Hispanics.

The idea of a Farage premiership for a period of time appeals to me if only to demonstrate he has zero judgement or gravitas to lead the country and his followers can watch in awe as he descends on a slippery slope of wilful ignorance of economic policy and his preposterous notion of Englishness.

Meaning of ethnicity.
"the quality or fact of belonging to a population group or subgroup made up of people who share a common descent or cultural background"
Who decreed "Englishness" was an ethnicity? What particular descent and cultural factors were agreed?

I call myself “British” and not “English“ even if my mom is English because when I lived there I felt more connected to Britishness which allowed for a kind of multiculturalism while ”Englishness” was less about culture and more about a level of whiteness I couldn‘t ever be a part of.

Her turn as HMQ rightfully gets a lot of attention, but she was better still playing Coral Browne opposite Simon Callow vamping as Guy Burgess in "An Englishman Abroad", the first part of the "Single Spies" double bill.
