The fight tonight was over about $25 billion. Thats about 2.5% of the Defense budget. Would cover a year of the enhanced ACA credits. Republicans said that’s unaffordable.

The only thing Senate Democrats should be agreeing to is an extension of the enhanced premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for millions of Americans buying plans on the health exchanges and releasing the Trump-Epstein files.

The rainbow eucalyptus, only slightly enhanced (really!).

A flexible spending account that replaces enhanced ACA premium tax credits would help people with their out-of-pocket health care costs. But, that help would be limited if they couldn't afford to buy insurance to begin with without the enhanced tax credits.

GOP operatives (including two Trump pollsters) have long called for reinstituting the ACA credits, warning that the GOP is on track to pay a “political penalty” for its actions.
As Jeffries points out, the largest percentage of voters who make use of the enhanced ACA tax credits are Republicans.

Major concession from Democrats here is enhanced ACA funds aren’t extended. Preserving them was Dems’ central demand in this fight. They secured a promise of a vote (which Thune has been offering for weeks), but that could still fail. Even if it passes, Johnson has made no promise of a House vote.
Tentative Senate deal to end shutdown, multiple sources tell me & @frankthorp.bsky.social:

—CR through Jan 30
—Approps minibus
—Fully funds SNAP
—Reverses Trump’s shutdown RIFs
—Promise of Senate vote on ACA subsidies by Dec second week (details/outcome uncertain)
—Led by King/Shaheen/Hassan

I'm sorry but are there new developments because last I heard we were talking about the enhanced subsidies still?!
The amount of people on here who were trashing the idea of the ACA being a good shutdown basis and now saying "Dems are letting the ACA expire" is showing me how much performative posters really make up this app.
Weird how at some point the ACA subsidies went from meaningless technocrat babble that it was obviously incredibly stupid for Democrats to try protecting to being incredibly important for helping people avoid suffering.

And Democrats managed to get it wrong both times!! What were the odds?

Senate Democrats have a common-sense compromise: Let’s extend the ACA enhanced tax credits at the current levels for a year, and start a bipartisan working group to find real, long-term solutions to our country’s health care crisis.

The path forward really was to force Republicans to open the government through chicanery or ending the filibuster and still doesn't give us enhanced subsidies.

ACA signups more than doubled since the enhanced premium tax credits went into effect, from 11.4 million in 2020 to 24.3 million this year. Without that enhanced premium assistance, enrollment will drop substantially.

"According to the publication, the communications could demonstrate willful infringement, potentially leading to enhanced damages of up to $150,000 per work, a massive increase from just $750."

The fact that it was ever at $750 is a slap in the face.

So you're more mad at Schumer than the Dems who "caved" on preventing the lapsing of Biden's "enhanced" premiums expiring?

Y'all should have voted for the Black woman then.

🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

Senate Dems aren't stupid. They know full well the Republicans and especially Donald will never extend the enhanced ACA subsidies. So, by flinching, they're guaranteeing premiums will spike by 114% -- people will go broke and/or die. Blaming Republicans in midterm campaign ads won't prevent that.

Where I am, for what little it is worth, is that the defectors were in fact defectors, and they blew the political opportunity. But we were not on the verge of extending the enhanced subsidies unless you can think of a way to get *House* Republicans on board.

And Republican were NEVER gonna vote to extend the enhanced subsidies. Everybody knows that... or should 😒

Sooo.

AIPAC wanted the government shutdown to end, so SNAP benefits and enhanced PTC could expire anyway?

I swear, y'all will blame the Jews for everything.

Good thing Fetterman gets a pass.
