#EE-grid
The big thing in the early 2000s was developing the next fastest processor so I studied electrical engineering. Turns out chip design was boring but our EE program also had a power specialization & I was like "everyone needs electricity, that sounds stable." So now I rebuild our aging power grid

Wer in Atom investiert verbrennt öffent. Geld

Zubau #EE in #China in 2025

The magic happens in this PAL chip, U87. A PAL is a customizable logic chip, which could encode a few dozen gates worth of logic by burning out select tungsten fuses in a grid. I'm not an EE, don't ask me how that works.

The grid of the future will owe as much to IT concepts like big data, predictive analytics and IoT as it does to EE concepts like current and voltage.
You need to get your head around this conceptual shift if you are to understand what is happening around you.

⚡ Utility Dive reports on potential risks posed by "disorganized integration" of large data center loads on the #TXenergy grid, as discussed at a recent PUCT meeting.

As this trend continues, EE & demand-side measures are essential for grid resiliency/reliability: buff.ly/b2XsNR3

Data center activity ‘exploded’ in Texas, spiking reliability risks: monitor
AI data centers have power demand patterns similar to steel mills, with “very fast, very large ramps,” according to David Penny, director of reliability services for Texas RE.

That’s my problem with the debate on cost shift. Many things are shifting cost. EE. rural/urban. Wildfire prone zones. Even taking a property off-grid: there is an existing distribution grid servicing the house that will continue to be maintained so disconnecting it is a “cost”

When I was in college (EE), we went on a trip to a hydroelectric power plant. They took us to a conference room built into the dam itself. In the back wall, there was a faucet with a tiny turbine and generator. They showed us how a generator is synchronized with the grid, using both an old (1/2)

Radio signals may spread farther than usual this weekend in Eastern Europe as a temperature inversion is expected in multiple countries. Here's an ECMWF forecast sounding for midnight on Sunday for a random grid point in Lithuania showing the warmer air aloft:

There’s a scale piece to this whereby a bunch of micro markets aggregate into a huge regional market - reshaping the grid geography. But the spreads for that will come second to the “micro fication” process. The VRE + BESS + flex + EE spread over existing resources and build-times is too big.

But electric grids *are* complex. Accomodating solar and other non-dispatchable renewable power has been a challenge for grid operators and one of the drivers for Smart Grids, which has been a whole research field in EE. Keeping the grid at 50/60 Hz is harder than most people think.

Caveat to 1)Sustainably sourcing metals for general use & RE demand and ON TIME is still very dubious.
Caveat to 2)Fossil primary energy is still rising so those 72k TWh renewables won't be 50% of 2030 fossil primary energy. And of course, COP pledges have been empty before. Methane Pledge anyone?
