In fact, the creation of the D’Deridex was partially in reaction to the deeply intimidating nature of Federation ships. The D-7 was no longer sufficiently impressive so they mimicked Starfleet design parameters while adding extra defenses. It is a match for a Galaxy in more than one way.

The D’Deridex and the Galaxy class have similar profiles. The only reason the D’Deridex is considered a battlecruiser is that the Romulan Empire is focused on combat; it is perfectly capable of the deep space line explorator role, with similar science and medical labs.

Commander Tomalak of the Romulan Star Empire exemplifies a more subtle strength in the service of D’era. Though his name is often linked to bold gestures—such as his command of a D’deridex-class warbird which crossed the Neutral Zone in 2366 to retrieve the scout ship Pi.
