We currently live in a political climate that where powerful people would very much like us all to forget these people.

That is exactly why TDoR is so important. Trans people, and especially trans POC, are frequent targets of bigoted violence.

It is important to remember the lives of transgender people who were murdered and it is equally important to remember that so much of that violence is targeted towards trans women of color.

Additionally many trans sex workers are also targets of violence.

So they founded TDoR to remember Rita and Chanelle but also all people who were killed due to transphobic violence.

The day has been remembered ever since and has become an international holiday.

They founded the day to memorialize Rita Hester and Chanelle Picket. Both of whom were black transgender women who were murdered in Massachusetts. After Rita Hester was killed in 1998, the three of them remarked that no one seemed to remember Pickett who was murdered a few years prior.

TDoR also known as International Transgender Day of remembrance was established on November 20th, 1999. To was created to memorialize those who have been murdered by transphobic violence.

The founders of the day include: Jahaira DeAlto, Gwendolyn Ann Smith, and Nancy Nangeroni.
