The Light Continues Every evening, an hour before / the sun goes down, I walk toward / its light, wanting to be altered. / Always in quiet, the air still. / Walking up the straight empty road / and then back. When the sun / is gone, the light continues /high up in the sky for a while. / When I return, the moon is there. / Like a changing of the guard. / I don't expect the light / to save me, but I do believe / in the ritual. I believe / I am being born a second time / in this very plain way.

LALALOL And then came the day / I discovered my mother had been writing "LOL" / on the Facebook walls of her grieving friends. //Roger was a kind man. LOL. / Susan left this world far too soon. LOL. / Heaven has another angel. LOL. // Bless her heart and the hearts of the grieving families / but I couldn't help but Laugh Out Loud. // My poor mother, trying to send "Lots Of Love" / and not knowing how. // I knew if I told her she would never be able to forgive herself. / But I knew if I didn't... //Jenny will be deeply missed. LOL. / You will meet again in a better place. LOL. / I'm so so sorry to hear about your loss. LOL. // What do we owe to the truth? / Certainly not our mothers' smiles. // I couldn't think of a worse thing to take from someone / than the comfort they had offered others. // So I stayed quiet, and prayed that if she became / the laughing stock of town, the laughers would / Laugh Out Loud and she would hear it the way she always had. / Just Lots Of Love. LOVE'S WEIGHT My mother would say my grandma only went to church for the brunch that followed at the Wichachee Diner where she'd order Big Breakfast Number Two with extra toast and stop for a banana split at the take-out window of the corner store on her way home. And that's to say she was the type to buy too much Halloween candy and forget to leave the light on for the trick-or-treaters. I watched her do that every year till her son Peter died, and then her daughter Barbara too, and I suppose a mother can't lose two children and want to take a bite out of anything but god's invisible face. The last time I saw her she was in a rocking chair, not rocking. The doctor said she had been refusing to eat for weeks. I know some people could watch someone die like that without deciding love is nothing but hunger for certain and unlivable grief. But I was not someone who could do that. And still, my love, and still, my love.

With My Back to the World, 1997 This year I turned my back to the world. I let language face // the front. The parting felt like a death. The first person ran / away like a horse. When the first person left, there was no // second or third person as I had originally thought. All that / remained was repetition. And blue things. This year I stopped / shaking the rain off of umbrellas and nothing bad happened. // The terror of this year was emptiness. But I learned that it's // possible for a sentence to have no words. That the meaning of / a word can exist without the word. That life can still occur // without a mind. That emptiness still swarms without the / world. That it can be disconnected from the wall and still // light up. The best thing about emptiness is if you close your /eyes in a field, you'll open your eyes in a field.
