Local chipmunk helps themselves to one of my cherry tomatoes from the front garden... Which he carried all the way to the back porch, so he could eat it in front of the patio door while taunting the cats. 🤣

One day, when we get through this, I hope to build a library like my paternal grandfather had. Of what little remains of his library I can tell you it would involve custom bookplates, false books for stashes, and poetry books with my future spouse's name and address written in them.

Attempts to request my great-grandfather's military records have hit a slight hitch.

Better response than for my grandfather's records (great-grandfather is Grandma's father), which was basically "lol we need more info here's 2 forms to fill out and mail in."

If the record were here on July 12, 1973, it would have been in the area that suffered the most damage in the fire on that date and may have been destroyed. The fire destroyed the major portion of records of Army military personnel for the period 1912 through 1959, and records of Air Force personnel with surnames Hubbard through Z for the period 1947 through 1963. Fortunately, there are alternate records sources that often contain information which can be used to reconstruct service record data lost in the fire; however, complete records cannot be reconstructed. We are mailing you NA Form 13075 (or NA Form 13055) which asks for additional information concerning the veterans' military service. Please use this form to provide us with as much information as you are able. This information will be used by our staff to help reconstruct service record data lost in the fire."

I found 2 reports re:the 101st Infantry Battalion, 26th Division. With the German border in sight, the 101st learned they would be pulled out of the sector. Eager to cross the border and knowing this might be their one chance, they really pushed hard to try and cross. Great-Granpa was in Co A 101st-

The 1st Bn rejoined their regiment on 8 Dec when they were trucked into FORT WITTRING (569508) and moved to WOELFLING (591541) as regimental reserve. On the 11th of Dec it was learned that the regiment was going to be pulled out of this sector, and the German border was in sight. When the attack started the three battalions were all in a line, and to cross the German border was the desire of every man. The enemy composition was very great, however, and Co A of the 1st Bn was the only company to get on German soil. The battalion was relieved that night in place by the 347th Regt, 87th Inf Div, and marched by the woods to the vicinity of HUTTING (554474) where they entrucked for METZ, FRANCE. The source for this information in the report is listed as "Lt Col Noel A Meyard, Bn Commander" and "Capt Elbert L. Ryan, Bn S-3". The place and date of interview is listed as "ZLEBY, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, 17 June 1945" Interviewer: 2nd Lt Carl W. Elvington A typewriter produced report. The text reads; "On 10 Dec the attack started with the objective to cross the German border, as the regiment knew they were going to be pilled out of the line and they wanted to get into Germany first. The 2d Bn was on the right and the 3d Bn on the left. The 320th Inf Regt, 35th Inf Div, was on the left, and the 346th Inf Regt, 87th Inf Div, which was attached to the 26th Inf Div, was right of the 2d Bn. After a hard day's fighting with the enemy putting up very stiff resistance, the attack got as far as the edge of the BRUCHEN forest along a road at the west edge. On the 11th, the attack started off again with the 1st Bn moving through the 3d Bn on the left, and the 3d Bn sent Co I to attack between the two battalions. Again the enemy was fighting with all its might to prevent the Americans from going into Germany, but Co A, 1st Bn, commanded by Lt Clark E. Reynolds, drove into Germany, this being the first company of the 26th Div to set foot in Germany. The next morning at 0950, the 12th of Dec, the regiment was relieved by the 347th Inf Regt, 87th Inf Div, and were marched by the woods into the vicinity of HUTTING (554474) where they entrucked for Metz. Time for a history break. In researching my great-grandfather's experience in #WWII I found a comprehensive report document written post-war about his Division! Interestingly enough there are reports from different sources of the same days/actions, but the facts differ(such as dates) between some.

A black and brown fluffy Maine Coon cat is yawning. The picture is taken from above and directly in front of the cats face. The kitty's little canine fangs poke out, but due to the angle and their yawning their lower jaw is not visible. So they kinda look like a scrungly little Nosferatu kitty.

Raymond's enlisted record and honorable discharge lists his civilian occupation as "Truck Driver". He entered active duty 28 March, 1944 and was honorably discharged 28 December, 1945. His discharge lists a Purple Heart, EAME campaign medal w/ 3 bronze stars and a good conduct medal.
Raymond also apparently was awarded "rumpus room" privileges. Pictured is a card reading: THE "RUMPUS ROOM" of C CO. 101ST INF. RAYMOND H. HUMPHREYS((stamped in)) is entitled to the privileges of the "RUMPUS ROOM" and is subject to its rules and regulations. This card is not transferable. SIGNATURE ((this space is blank)) EXPIRES WHEN REVOKED ((stamped in)) MANSFIELD DIXON 1st Lt., Infantry Commanding. I would like to have a rumpus room... The back of Raymond's Rumpus Room access card has some scribblings on it. The top says; WHAT TIME IS IT? WIE SPÄT IST ER RAYMOND H. HUMPHREYS AMERICAN SOLD. Allow me to introduce one Raymond H Humphreys of Company A, 1st Battalion, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division of the US Army. Raymond served (see: was drafted) as a Rifleman in the final years of WWII. Later he served as my Great Grandfather (V important service).
Raymond H Humphreys stands before a tank in the WWII Winter Uniform for enlisted members of the army, which consists of slacks, jacket, tie, and visored hat. The ground is covered in snow and ice, though there is barely ground visible under the tank's treads. A few other members of the army are visible in the background to the left, and one on the right. The photo is unlabelled unfortunately and the men unidentified as well as the location. Based on Raymond's service dates, it was taken either in late 1944, early 1945, or late 1945. Likely sometime between early 1944 and late 1945, and likely somewhere in France.

Time for a baby break. By baby, of course I mean cat.
Reggie, a brown-black Maine Coon mix is pictured here laying on the armrest of a couch, having a snooze. Only his right paw is visible, quite a large footsie which clearly denotes his heritage. His big old fluffy tail is folded forward on his right side, a kind favor to allow the viewer to gaze upon it. His left ear is missing the tip, identifying him as a beneficiary of a Trap-Neuter-Release program, or TNR. The former semi-feral was taken in from an apartment complex in far Northeast Dallas, as he was limping and appeared injured. A vet visit and X-ray later (paid out of pocket) and he was determined to be...probably fine! Maybe just a pulled muscle or strain. A neuter later and a few weeks in recovery and he demonstrated a dog-like fondness for his rescuer. Trapped between an adorable, totally adoptable cat, a pending move from TX to NY, and the harsh reality of a strained and overburdened animal rescue community of Texas, it was decided he would make the adventurous trek from TX to NY with hopes to privately adopt him out in the future. Reggie repeatedly escaped his carrier to climb into the passenger seat so he could watch the scenery. This always resulted in pulling over and getting him re-secured. Now settled in NY for a bit more than a year, Reggie continues a dog-like protective manner of all humans he becomes fond of, often sitting or laying down in the doorway of rooms they are in, facing outwards, ever vigilant for threats... Or other cats who want attention.
