spaceflight nerd, if the banner pic didn't give that away

new name time! Tali, if you please.

(they / them, in a "gender currently under renovation" sort of way)
there's a LEGO store in Terminal 4 at JFK, which also has me a little confused as to their target market

(now imagining someone building a LEGO set on their tray table during the flight, only to have the plane hit turbulence and scatter the pieces across 3 rows of seats)

oh - and for the last night of my trip i splurged and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, because where else are you going to get to go for a swim on the 118th floor?

at one point Valve released a heat map of player death locations from HL2:E2. this was the map from the first environment where you leave the crashed train, look out over the cliff, and see the destroyed Citadel ("down" in this map orientation)

some people can't help themselves, apparently

incidentally, i visited Rome about a month ago, and this was one of the bigger "oh shit, it's *that* painting!" moments

weird aviation trivia: if you buy a Cessna 172, it's legally required to carry a SMOKING PROHIBITED placard and you're legally required to obey it (even if it's your own plane!)

but if you buy a Piper Archer - no such limitation! smoke all you want. (unless the carbon monoxide detector goes off.)

incidentally, the Delta IV Heavy (of which there's a model on the table in those pictures) is widely known among space nerds as "the most metal of rockets" -- because of its tendency to light itself on fire at launch

space nerd here, so my Sabaton fun fact is that they are United Launch Alliance CEO Tory Bruno's favorite band

finally having dinner at 11:30p - blessing/curse of having no one else here to say "you really ought to start cooking now..."

pork turned out really good though! (kitchen thermometers are wonderful tools)

stopped by there on a trip last month - can confirm, the food's pretty good

(the tricky part is guessing how much to eat/drink in the lounge, such that you're not unpleasantly full or tipsy after dinner on the plane)

looks like it was the service cabin that collapsed - it was retracted out of the way like normal before launch, so something must have gone wrong when sliding it back out

NASA posted the photo on the left of Zena Cardman on the ISS working through hatch opening procedures after the arrival of the latest Cygnus cargo vehicle - but what caught my eye was the Sauce Wall just above their dinner table

(velcro is a wonderful thing)

with apologies for potentially spoiling the joke:

in three dimensions, those four ethyl groups are in a tetrahedral configuration, not a square planar one

i have had goose only once - was flying from India back to the US on Lufthansa, and since it was early December they had a holiday-appropriate as well as regionally-appropriate dish on the menu

we've got some aerial photos now too

to quote Jim Lovell - "there's one whole side of that spacecraft missing!"

to quote Fred Haise - "it's really a mess"

sadly I didn't get around to having carbonara on my recent trip, but I did have bucatini all'amatriciana (in Rome) and pici cacio e pepe (in Siena), both of which were delicious
