The point is that the character's whole arc was that he was supposed to be this stereotypical man's man of a pirate who was afraid to reveal that's not who he was. And realized he didn't have to do any of that. Just because that's what you read into it doesn't change the ultimate message.

There's also the the fact that people who don't interact with this sort of thing but want to be supportive might not have the proper vernacular out of the gate.

Or because that's something pirates are steretypically known to do and he's also trying to adhere to a toxic masculine paradigm. Cause he thinks he has to.
