By that logic, I should have lots of matches to the great-grandfather that is presently on my tree, but I don't. Not one. That is why this other possibility (my great-grandmother's 2nd husband) seems a real possibility. Not long after my grandfather's birth, my ggm divorced and remarried.

Ancestry says the match could be 4c or half 3c1r. According to my research the common ancestor would be my 3x GG and his 4x GG, which would make us 4c 1r. According to DNA painter that fits 62%. Most of my matches are around this level, I have very few over 40cM.
