"How Sociotropic Aesthetic Judgments Drive Opposition to Housing"
NEW PAPER w/ @cselmendorf.bsky.social & @jkalla.bsky.social:

An under-appreciated reason why voters oppose dense new housing, especially in less-dense neighborhoods: they think it looks ugly and want to prevent that, even in other neighborhoods.

Some of what we think is NIMBYism might not be!

This is a poll showing that tens of MILLIONS of Americans want to live in each one of these cities but they can't bc there's a housing crisis.
Bluesky: “Obviously the housing crisis is the only reason anyone would choose to live outside of NYC”

Actual Americans: “Vegas, baby!”

When they say that kenyan mcduffie is "business-friendly" what they mean is that he's going to give huge kick backs and corrupt contracts to his donor buddies. They don't means he'll actually be friendly to local DC businesses - he won't! - they mean he'll help outside elites plunder the city. 🚩💀
What do we think?

Very funny that right wing masculinity is just a bunch of "tough" guys cowering in fear together over what they're not allowed to do with their own freedom
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

All these cities have wildly popular dense walkable neighborhoods that most residents can't afford to live in bc it's illegal to build what people want anymore
Places that aren’t high-cost coastal metros:
Detroit
Cleveland
Cincinnati
Columbus
Indianapolis
Minneapolis
St. Louis
Richmond
Raleigh-Durham
Charlotte
Memphis
Nashville
Charlotte
Louisville
Philadelphia
Dallas
Phoenix
Las Vegas
San Antonio
Milwaukee
Pittsburgh
Baltimore
Austin
Denver
El Paso
Bro if you sum the population of all the metros mentioned you end up with like slight more them one New York metro and you vary from metros with 7 million people to metros with 1.5M don't you find it a little exaggerative of calling these wildly different places a median for the Us as a whole

No need to delay: Not only did the Board of Elections clearly state that they are ready and capable of implementing ranked choice voting, but the voters already told us how they "assessed the need" by overwhelmingly passing it at the ballot box.
NEWS: Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder is introducing emergency legislation that would delay ranked-choice voting, which is currently set to be rolled out in D.C. in 2026. His bill would mandate that Board of Elections conduct an assessment on what it would need to implement RCV.

UPDATE: I've got good news for DC!
Every bad thing Mayor Bowser does is like "well she agrees with stephen miller on this" and every good thing she does is like "well she gave the farm away to her donor buddies for a sub par product" - and that's the entirety of her tenure. DC needs a good mayor so badly.

Developers with political ties to Mayor Muriel E. Bowser stand to collect millions of dollars more than housing experts say is normal for an affordable housing project.”

One way you can objectively see bias is media is who they define as "activists" and who they don't. You'll see people who show up to, for instance, left wing protests or bike lane rallies defined as "activists" while people showing up to right wing protests or anti-bike lane rallies are not... 🤔🚩

How D.C. developers made big money on a taxpayer-funded housing project
The Ethel was built on land provided by the city and benefited from a cascade of government subsidies that helped enrich its developers, a Washington Post investigation found.

A councilmember who won his primary last year with 23.7% of the vote wants to delay implementing ranked choice voting. The at-large CM who won her last primary with 35.9% agrees that making her run for reelection next year under RCV would be a bad idea.
Felder continues to be critical of the election board's capacity to pull off ranked-choice voting in 2026.

"Before we roll out something of this magnitude I would think we need to do a needs assessment," he says to Evans. "You’ve been tasked with an arduous task. It’s unfair."

Zohran adding YIMBYs to his transition team is resulting in some absolutely incredible Left NIMBY crashouts over on Twitter. This is my favorite.

It's funny that we only ever say "out of town" and never out of city, out of village, out of unincorporated area or whatever. We've got people from downtown Manhattan and people living as a hermit in the middle of nowhere both saying "oh sorry I'm out of town right now"...🤔😂

Nothing exposes the idiocy of NIMBYism more than the fact they relentlessly keep insisting criminals board the city bus with your big screen TV after burgling your house instead of using a getaway car 🤨
Well this one just about checks every alarmist dog whistling box huh?

The powers that be keep screaming at us that locking up more and more people reduces crime and improves public safety.

Is that really true, or could it be like saying "the Earth is flat" which seems obvious only if you just don't actually look into it at all 🤔?
A @nytimes.com investigation has found that state prison guards have been credibly accused of engaging in such behavior — putting inmates in restraints and then assaulting them — far more often than was previously known.

Feeling a lot of pain over that loss. This nevertheless feels like a very accurate synopsis of the match. 2 equally spectacularly talented teams with 1 unfortunately bad decision that was taken advantage of. The 2 best teams in the #NWSL
Totally, it was the wrong decision, and one that was very reasonable to make.

On some level, this match came down to the team that took advantage of their circumstantial advantage. Gotham score with Hal hindered. Spirit didn't when Reale on yellow.
