It was a lot deeper and darker than I expected, and some of the script was a bit clichéd. But the acting was excellent and the cinematography was incredible. I'd recommend it.

I remember hearing some gossip about Rebecca Miller pulling the "don't you know who I am" attitude to some of the locals while she was making that film. (Although the film itself turned out to be very good, as you say.)

Most of it is sold to food processors, because it contains a gel (carrageenan) that's used as a thickener. Back in the day it was also piled around the outer walls of house foundations, as insulation. And it's still mostly harvested by a rider on a horse, dragging a big rake behind them!
