It’s important to recognize when a scene needs to go. If nothing changes, if it’s only backstory, if it lacks conflict, or if it repeats information readers already know, it may be dragging your story down.

A well-structured scene has a clear beginning, middle, and end. It sets up stakes, delivers conflict or discovery, and ends with a shift—something that changes the direction or emotional landscape of the story.

Every scene should accomplish something meaningful: advancing the plot, developing character, building tension, or grounding the story through worldbuilding. Strong scenes usually do more than one of these at once.
