23. Cute Bite (2021)

Your vampire mistress was cursed; now she must regain her power over a year or you'll be in danger as her familar. Really engaging stat-raiser game (also gay), i've loved Hanako Games for ages, and this is another great entry in their library

22. DRCL midnight children (2021-)

An adaptation of Dracula where Lucy is transfemme, Mina is an angry Anne Shirley, and Dracula is both a spreading biomass and also a catboy. The highest tier of art is what i'm saying (and also THE ART)

20. Interview with the Vampire (1976)

Redefined vampire fiction & rewired my brain at an early age. A gutting story about cycles of abuse, invents the child vampire. Anne was the queen of critiquing but then perpetuating fraught subjects by turns. Stop after book 3

16. Red Embrace Hollywood (2019)

VTM with the numbers filed off (done v well), v about the devs' frustrations with making romance games. Gets lost up its butt at times, but I can appreciate makin a game where the decision to romance these dudes makes them worse

15. Red Embrace (2015)

A romance VN (with pronoun/sprite choice) very clearly in homage to Vampire the Masquerade. Short but sweet, and makes very good use of its runtime to create a fun set of characters

12. Cirque du Freak (2000-2004)

Darren becomes a vampire's assistant and winds up in a war over destiny itself. A very shonen take on vampires (has a manga! okay but loses a bit) that deserves to be spotlighted as anti-war kidlit alongside Animorphs and Hunger Games

11. Vampire Princess Miyu (1988)

A spiritualist tracks Miyu across Japan, driven by obsession and her past
One of the best horror anime and one of the best OVAs of the 80s. Eerie and melancholy, good balance between episodic and serial narrative in just 4 episodes

9. Bit (2019)

A trans girl falls in with a gang of vampires on her first night in LA. Struggles under the weight of being The Trans Vampire Movie TM (written by an ally) but the best parts shine. I wrote a whole academic article on it

8. Bloody Mary (2013-2017)

A vampire seeks out an exorcist who might be able to finally kill him. It does not go as planned. Supremely underrated, 10 volumes, gay in a "not kissing on page but they're eternal soulmates" way, and just the right amount of silly anime bullshit

7. "Small Changes Over Long Periods of Time" (2017)

A really solid short story about a trans guy trying to figure out how to keep taking HRT now that he's a vampire

6. Ganja & Hess (1973)

An anthropologist cursed with immortality finds an unlikely partner in his search for answers. One of the best experimental 70s films, starring Night of the Living Dead's Duane Jones, and tough to find uncut until very recently

4. The Gilda Stories (1991)

Four vignettes in the life of a Black lesbian vampire; very in convo with Rice thematically and stylistically, but TGS imagines vampirism as a site of communal memory keeping and solidarity across generations of the marginalized. A must.

2. The Black Vampyre: A Legend of St. Domingo (1819)

The first American vampire story, short and well worth reading to get a richer understanding of the genre

If you see this, quote with a vampire that isn't Dracula.

I want people to give Yamamoto her flowers forever for how hard she fought working on Yuri On ICE. That episode 7 kiss is there because she refused to back down. She's the kind of artist we need. And look what she got for it.

We're probably never going to see another Sayo Yamamoto anime, and that honestly breaks my heart more than I have words to convey. I feel so much anger on her behalf. Fuck MAPPA.

We're finally getting a physical release for DEVILMAN CRYBABY. Costs $100, has the English dub...but not the closed captions. Eat my WHOLE ass, Netflix.

This was from the PREMIERE of The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess (a very fun series that deserves better), for pete's sake.

Apologies for the blur, seeing it like that kind of took me aback and I had to rush to get the photo.

It's also a special joy to see cosplay from older or more obscure faves (I'll never be over the year someone came as Atsuko Jackson).

Saw so many beautiful cosplay this weekend. I'm always in awe of the care people put in to both simple and complex costumes.
