Mostly music, but also sports. Also a decent bit of book talk, outdoorsy stuff, etc. Not FJM.

FIONA APPLE
Extraordinary Machine
(2005)

How is this album 20 years old? Regardless, Fiona just doesn’t miss and this one might be my favorite of hers. So much is said about her singing and songs, but I feel like her piano playing doesn’t get enough love. Such a distinctive style.

ALFRED SCHNITTKE
Choir Concerto
(1994)

Late 20th century Soviet composer whose work I love. Some of it is ultra modernist and some is ethereal and highly spiritual. This piece is in the latter camp. Many say it’s not only among the 20th century’s best choral works, but among best ever.

MIDIVAL PUNDITZ
MIDIval PunditZ
(2002)

EDM from New Delhi. South Asian electronic music really had a moment in the early to mid 00s. I’m sure there’s still some great stuff being made, I’m just as plugged into that scene as I once was.

KAWABATA MAKOTO & THE MOTHERS OF INVASION
Hot Rattlesnakes
(2006)

Acid Mothers Temple guitarist goes on a wild, screaming, psychedelic ride. AMT (and Kawabata solo) are incredibly prolific, so it’s easy to drown in their discography, but I return to this one a lot.

JACOB MILLER
The “Killer” Rides Again
(1991)

Posthumously released compilation from the reggae singer. Some good stuff on here, but “Ala-Ala-Bama” is the standout track by a considerable margin IMO.

TREY ANASTASIO
Paper Wheels
(2015)

Probably the poppiest album Trey has put out. Some of it really hits and I wish he’d play some of this stuff more with TAB. Also really cool packaging on this one.

Not sad about the projected 2026 Blue Jays starting rotation.

…and got to see a solo Nels Cline matinee noise show that same afternoon. Fun day. That one was for the true diehards and sickos. 😎

That said, I enjoyed the hell out of my solo birthday trip to see Wilco this year. Fifth row aisle seat to watch the shred lord Nels Cline up close and personal? Don’t mind if I do.

#NowSpinning #NowPlayng

Dutch lutist who writes modern music for this ancient instrument. It’s mostly just instrumental, but he sings some and this particular record has guest spots from Yasmine Hamdan, Jim Jarmusch, and others. Unique stuff.

AMEN DUNES
Love
(2014)

Don’t remember how I stumbled across AD, but I love this record the most of all of his. I’ve listened 3-4 times today. He brought in members of Iceage and Godspeed You! Black Emperor to play on this (two of my faves.) Highly recommend this one!

BATTLES
Dross Glop
(2012)

Remixes of songs from their Gloss Drop album. I’m not normally a big remix guy, but figured if Battles was putting it out that I’d be super into it. It’s good, but not great. A fun diversion, but nothing is as good as the source material.

TORO Y MOI
Underneath the Pine
(2011)

The album that got me into TYM. The song “How I Know” is a chillwave/synthpop masterpiece IMO. I also remember meeting a TON of Birmingham Twitter people at his show on this tour (RIP Bottletree.) Super gross cover art though 🤣

STEPHEN MALKMUS
Face the Truth
(2005)

Not gonna lie, I generally enjoy SM’s solo work as much as I do Pavement. “Pencil Rot” is definitely one of favorites he’s ever penned. “It Kills”…well…kills. Just a banger of a record.

NIKHIL BANERJEE
Afternoon Ragas
(1992)

Recording of a 1970 concert from Rotterdam. Talk about “thank a taper.” So many great recordings of Indian are AUDS or SBDS from 70s/80s taper heads and this show very much fits that bill. Raga Records unearthed so many great recordings.

TINARIWEN

The OG Tuareg band playing a fiery set in front of an enthusiastic Parisian crowd. I cannot recommend seeing this band enough. They are an absolute must see for live music lovers.

MDOU MOCTAR
Mixtape Vol. 1
(2020)

Digital only pay-what-you-want release during the pandemic. This volume includes demos from Ilana, concert recordings from the US, wedding performances from Niger, etc. Great idea as a money maker as these releases were only available for a week or so.
