I think debating scientific topics is almost always counterproductive. Science isn't settled via rhetoric; it relies on evidence. Q&A, where the audience asks questions of a scientist, or a panel discussion among scientists about unresolved questions can enlighten, but not debate.

Cat food, otoh, typically has pull tabs. Felines tend to be picky eaters and cat moms and dads dote on their companions. Paying a couple cents more for the convenience of a pull tab on their preferred brand means nothing. Ditto with soups, as the product really is differentiated by brand.

More thoughts before my morning coffee: a lot depends on the price sensitivity of the product. Talking about the US here, canned tuna is all the same; brand makes no real difference. Hence, no pull tabs because even a penny more in price would have a negative impact on sales.

Two reasons why pull tabs aren't universal: 1) pull tabs are more expensive to manufacture; 2) cans with pull tabs are more likely to be damaged during shipping; manufacturers have to make a call as to whether more sales due to convenience make up for increased cost
