ALAN WAKE II // REMEDY // 2023
really good! probably remedy's best since Max Payne 2, a fascinating and often astonishing culmination of the work they've been doing since then. I've held a torch for this studio for as long as I can remember, fascinated by their mixed-media approach and uniquely careful eye for filmic presentation, and alan wake 2 makes good on the promise they've always showed. this game looks phenomenal, has a lot to love in its narrative, and has some of the most interesting and compelling spaces in any game of the past decade. but. there hasn't been a remedy game that has stuck the landing since max payne 2. alan wake 1 ended with almost all of its best ideas unexplored. control didn't even end at all. alan wake 2 comes close, it comes so close. but the post-credits reveal is dizzyingly, embarrassingly bad, and cheats the game out of a bleak, but ultimately very satisfying ending, that boldly took both the player and alan out of the proceedings and denying them resolution as penance for what they've done. I'm only so disappointed in this direction because I so loved what the game went for in the original ending, and wish it was free from the burden of being the lynchpin of the Remedy Cinematic Universe and simply could be a story. as with many things, I wish talented creatives had not become marvelpilled in recent years. still. it's good! it's good.

PANZER DRAGOON ORTA // SMILEBIT // 2002
on the flipside..."it's just not very good" is the phrase I keep reaching for, even though it feels terribly harsh. it looks astonishing and lush to this day, even if it has almost no aesthetic relation to the saturn panzer dragoons and I think I like how those games look a lot more. but I can't help how I feel, and how I feel is that I did not enjoy this game very much. the narrative is depressingly unambitious and dull after how much creativity and nuance saga packed into a pretty terse script. if panzer dragoon was inspired by a moebius comic without dialogue, orta seems inspired primarily by the phantom menace, and unfortunately I mean that as a pretty cutting putdown. even in the play of it, I think I would rather play either the original or Zwei. you could play the entirety of those games in the time it would take one to finish a couple of orta's exhaustingly long stages. well aware that this one has a very strong reputation but i dunno, I just didn't fuck with it!

PANZER DRAGOON SAGA // SEGA - TEAM ANDROMEDA // 1998
i've heard about panzer dragoon saga for many, many years, as this unattainable classic that will never be matched. reputations such as these are profoundly cruel things to foist upon any work, as by the very definition of the reputation, it is one that it can never hope to live up to, only be a distant relation of. far better, then, to evade comparison to reputation entirely, which Saga does wonderfully. this isn't the doomed funeral dirge of a thousand dreams that never came to pass, a final fantasy antithesis - it's a humble, passionate, ruthlessly inventive and creative work that still stands defiant as something unique and unreplicable, precisely because its ambitions live in subtle places, its aesthetic concerns existing far more in the vast space that exists between grand vistas, inhabiting a strange world with an aesthetic vision that still feels like it comes from a far distant time. also the main character is named "edgy". i absolutely loved it. panzer dragoon, zwei, and saga is one of the best trilogies in the medium.

there are many games that contain an Erin. there are even some that might contain an emanation of Erin's divine will. but truly, no game quite lets you Play as Erin, like Dino Crisis
I absolutely loved this. Not without its flaws, but such a smart elaboration on what Resident Evil did, filled with love and interest for its 3D environment and the capabilities of it. the last stretch where you're running around trying to turn on a big machine is quite bad because Shinji Mikami physically cannot bring himself to make a game that doesn't fall apart at the end but that's really the only complaint I can muster at this. tense and exciting and filled with low poly PS1 Velociraptors. what more can one ask for.

ETRIAN ODYSSEY UNTOLD: THE MILLENIUM GIRL // ATLUS // 2014
better than you might have heard, not as good as you'd necessarily want. the story mode is a bizarre addition that attempts to contort etrian into the shape of a more traditional jrpg, but sacrifices too much of itself for little reward. what makes untold worthwhile is classic mode, and the redone dungeon layouts: it makes for a rewarding return for fans who have played the original to what remains one of the most compelling structures of the form, with redone level design that eschews the long corridors and hostile dead ends of the original for something more genuinely labyrinthian. it doesn't replace the original, by any means, and i'd still encourage etrian fans to try the first game over this version. but for what it is? i liked it.
