Researchers who docked a vessel for an "unanticipated repair" last September found the cause of the problem wasn't just unanticipated, it was downright bizarre.

Where is the money going? In the case of for-profit publishers it's very clear:

Your open access fees fund corporate profit margins.

Profit margins for large academic publishers can far exceed those of household names like Amazon and Apple.

Yeah. I like to use em-dashes, and my entire legal blog is in every major LLM because it is in Common Crawl.

I don't write like the LLM; the LLM stole my work so it could write like me.
I can’t believe people are still saying this. The reason LLMs use m-dashes is bc they were trained on human writing, and a particular style of writing makes heavy use of m-dashes. In journo school we used to meme about how much we all loved the m-dash. Guess what’s oversampled in AI training data?

There are no red states, no blue states, only purple, from Idaho fuchsia to Vermont violet. And in every state there are children, non-citizens, and prisoners who can't vote. In every state where one candidate won, a bunch of people voted for the other candidate. And so forth.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

NIH cuts have life and death consequences.

How a cancer patient became collateral damage to Trump’s purge of the federal workforce, @carolynyjohnson.bsky.social reports wapo.st/44ntbo4
His custom cancer therapy is in an NIH freezer. He may not get it in time.
The purge of probationary federal workers included skilled lab personnel who would have finalized a customized cell immunotherapy for cancer patients.

I kid you not, my work knows that I do drawing on the side and someone in the office told me AI could save me time and my response was "but I like drawing" and it broke them. They didn't know how to answer, they just couldn't comprehend that people make art because they like making art.

Great timing. I should do this for upcoming preprint figures. 🧪
Pro tip, folks: if you make a figure for a publication, don’t just hand the copyright over to the publisher. Post it on OSF first and then give yourself permission to use it in the first publication and then all future publications. That way, no permissions issues.

We’re finally entering the era where we can map precisely how gut microbes modulate human health.

A new study just revealed one such pathway. A fungal microbe inhibits a gut enzyme, decreasing ceramide and inflammation. = new and better drug targets!🧪

It can't. But, what DOGE accidentally revealed about themselves in the process is fascinating. 🧵
