did they used to have a location in Chapel Hill near Elliot Rd? what was the cafeteria in that mall?
December 2, 2025 at 2:39 AM
sure, but I’m saying that for better or worse I would *want* to spur on a moment of dislocation. everyone needs to have their minds blown once in a while

haven’t read it but this intrigues me!

just recently I was talking casually with someone about Coltrane and gave a brief layman’s-terms explanation of his extensive use of chord substitutions. the response was, “was that something he did consciously or was it more by feel?”

these notions die hard!

man do I need to check out Ruby Braff? I probably do. I’ve only listened to a track here and there, and half-heartedly at that

I mean not to get polemical but there are still plenty of polite (white) folks who would find themselves blindsided by the realization that Black musicians can and do make music that isn’t “entertainment”
December 2, 2025 at 2:21 AM
are you implying that Meditations is NOT TASTY
December 2, 2025 at 2:16 AM
I do think it’s great music. do I think someone who has enjoyed jazz with the idea that it’s swinging, melodic music suitable for unwinding to will necessarily enjoy Meditations? no, not at first. I certainly didn’t.

or like play him the original version of “Naima” and when he likes (because he will) tell him to check out the really great version on Live at the Village Vanguard Again! and then ask what he thought in a completely innocent way

I swear I’m not usually That Guy Who Must Prove His Taste in Music Is Cooler Than Yours and this wouldn’t even be about that. I just have this admittedly sick desire to unsettle this coworker’s idea of what jazz is
December 2, 2025 at 2:10 AM
never listened to them! I'll check 'em out

you mean the US? (or at least much/most of it)
December 1, 2025 at 2:14 PM
on second thought it should be “what better way to *practice* care” but alas, no edit button

people who accept us and hopefully love us, and being safe enough to stop, cook, and eat together—whatever is or isn’t on the plate.

and my wish is for everyone (including me) to remember the basics and not to get hung up on details that won’t really matter in the long run: whether the turkey was dry, or the mashed potatoes too dense, or the greens too tough.

if we’re fortunate enough, we can simply celebrate being among …

we shouldn’t lose sight of this most basic and most crucial relevance of a benighted holiday driven by a corrosive myth—let’s be honest. but I respect the actual emotional needs T-giving fulfills year by year.
December 1, 2025 at 3:56 AM
maybe this has something to do w/T-giving. everyone wants to feel safe, and food is safety—no doubt about it. knowing there’s enough food—even plenty of it—is a comfort, and I respect it. and what better way to show care than to cook for and with loved ones and eat together.
