From Texas to DC. 2300 miles. With their dog, Aloka. One monk had his leg amputated in hospital after he was hit by a car. Rohatsu/Bodhi Day is Dec 8, when Gotama touched the Earth under the Bodhi Tree and attained enlightenment. Praying for the Peacewalkers this morning.🙏📿☸️🕉️OM Shanti Shanti Shanti.
A group of nineteen Buddhist monks is on a "Walk for Peace" pilgrimage traveling on foot to Washington, D.C.

The monks are walking across the country to pray for peace in America and for all mankind are scheduled to arrive in Natchez, Mississippi on Friday, December 5, 2025.

This story is me trying to come to terms with feeling 'useless' (I mean, not in the face of apocalypse, just in the face of... everything, life, whatever) and realizing that no one is useless. We might not be fighting, we might not be defending, but we DO have a role to play in the world, always.💖

Trump’s obsession with demonizing Somali Minnesotans is creepy.

We are not leaving and we will not stop fighting for a country that welcomes all of us.

Reading through apocryphal Nativity Gospels this holiday season: currently the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew. I really need to write a Substack on the fascinating traditions of Mary's date palm tree! 🌴

And according to Buddhist ideas, what these people will be reborn as in their next rebirths are also equally bleak. But perhaps after many lifetimes even they might attain liberation and become dedicated Bodhisattvas who will engage in the transformative teaching of all beings to end all suffering.
Hegseth and co may never face temporal consequences

That doesn’t mean they’re avoiding all consequences…

Five local shops to decide?! My hometown back in the 80s had a grocery store, a bank, 2 gas stations, a drug store, a handcrafted clock shop, a hardware store, a lumber company, and an apparel store. Now it only has 1 gas station, the hardware store, and the bank. The Internet is the way!
there's a certain personality that's very debilitating in modern life. 100 years ago, if you wanted to buy something, you'd go to five local shops and decide. now with the internet, you need to spend 1,000 hours so you can own the best version in the world like you're some venetian patrician

They believe in the White Jesus and the White God of colonialism and Christendom, the punishing, predestinating God of Melville's "Moby-Dick," the God Which, as D. H. Lawrence understood, "sank the ship of the Great White Soul in 1851." Now, we suffer its "post-mortem effects, presumably."
I have to believe these people don’t actually believe in God because if they did they wouldn’t be so cavalier with such blatant blasphemy.
Add a dose of propaganda to your morning coffee.. This smells of Russian-like “special operation”

The effect of Plotinus and Neo-Platonism on Christianity and Christian monasticism has led to many of us erringly thinking spirituality and holiness means living alone in a hollow tree, a cave, a mountain, a windswept island, or within our own minds.
Creation may be, for now and the bits we can see, marred, but it’s not an accident and we believe God made it and loves it. The flight of the alone to the alone is not, after all, Christian. 5/11

Advent, Day 4. The Jesse Tree now has 3 ornaments. (We'll put the 4th one on tonight.) This little tree's branches will be packed with ornaments by the time we put the 27th ornament on the eve of December 24th!

This is a late ancient (5-7th c.?) Greek account of the life of a rich woman who was raised Jewish, converted to Christianity when her parents died, lived for 20 years as a male monk named John, was discovered & made head of a woman's monastery, & was later martyred

A Blessed First Sunday of Advent! 💜🕯️ Growing up Catholic, we decorated both a Catholic Jesse Tree (always a bare, dead branch🪾) and a Lutheran Christmas Tree🎄. These days, I use a small evergreen tree. Advent is the one season of the year when I get my childhood Catholicism out of storage.

As someone from South Dakota who personally knows many Somali-Americans who have moved to South Dakota from Minnesota, I can say beyond any doubt that our two neighboring states, and our local communities, are greatly enriched by their presence.
"Dear Hatemongers, We Aren't Going Back"

Trump, Stephen Miller, & MAGA have already lost. No matter how hard they try to send people of color "back" to our "third world countries," there are just too many of us. We're here & we're winning.
