And we can do that because we pay attention to EVERYTHING, whether the algorithm thinks it matters or not. Because it does matter. It matters more than the vast majority of people realize. And they’re missing out on SO MUCH by assuming it doesn’t. So we have to do something about that. Every. Day.

You know that scene from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA where Anne Hathaway doesn’t understand how high fashion influences what she buys at a store, and Meryl Streep takes her to school? A good critic can do that for any mainstream film people take for granted, by way of arthouse, cult and classic cinema.

It’s literally a critic’s job to watch/read/play EVERYTHING, as much as possible, inside and outside the mainstream, whether it looks worthwhile or not, because it’s our role to find something new, unexpected, and/or unusual. The rest of our publications chase trends. Critics find the new ones.

Now "browsing" means Netflix compiles your recent watch history and feeds you more of the exact same thing. Or Amazon analyzes your buy history and gives you a list of 15 books with basically the same title. You rarely stumble upon something new or different by chance. It's eroding our curiosity.
