One of Australia's unique avian voices - the song of a male Brown Songlark. A melodic jumble of electric buzzes & scratchy metallic notes, it has been described as sounding like a wheel squeaking on a rusty axle!

Enjoy this gentle nocturnal soundscape from deep in the Amazon.

Such a diversity of sound at night at this recording location!

Female Satin Bowerbird - she doesn't have the dazzling glossy ink blue of the male but is still a stunner!

One of Australia’s silliest bird sounds – the calls of the Wompoo Fruit Dove. Despite the lack of vocal grace, they are still one of the world's most beautiful pigeons!

In this sample a group of Wompoo Fruit Doves were having strange gargling conversations while tucking into some rainforest fruit.

Predawn song of a Pied Butcherbird in early spring. Before sunrise at this time of year the song of butcherbirds (and Australian Magpies) is often made up of simpler, more repetitive phrases than the typical full song heard later in the morning - but it's still sublime!

As spring approaches, many Australian birds will be ramping up their songs! Over the next month or so on my Youtube channel (www.youtube.com/wildambience), I’ll feature a bunch of beautiful, unusual, iconic or otherwise interesting Australian bird sounds.

Some photos from my recent field recording trip to the Amazon & cloud forest in Ecuador. As always, local guides were invaluable in making the trip a success and helping me track down and record many of the sounds I was targeting. #fieldrecording #soundscape #sound

Just now wrapping up an epic six week trip recording sounds in South America, from the Ecuadorian Amazon to the temperate Valdivian forests of southern Chile.

Here's a few shots from the Amazon. Will post some audio samples soon...

Wombat dreams.

On my last visit to #Tasmania, I stumbled across this adorable mother wombat having a well-deserved afternoon nap (she was carrying a decent sized joey in her pouch)!

Australian Magpies singing in the darkness before dawn. One of the best sounds to wake up to while camping in the bush!

One of Australia’s underrated birds – the Metallic Starling!

In the right light their iridescent purple and green plumage is striking, as are their big red eyes! This species migrates each summer from New Guinea to north Queensland to breed. #wildoz #birds #birding

I have a love/hate relationship with cassowaries. Wonderful birds, until they walk straight at you with that unnerving look in their eye! This Northern Cassowary in West Papua rounded me up in the forest the day after this photo was taken & I ended up shielding behind a tree with heart pumping😅

One of the most magical Australian bird calls - the local 'flute' accent of Superb Lyrebirds in the New England Tablelands of NSW.

Some strange sounds from the Australian rainforest! The unique calls of Wompoo Fruit Doves, Spotted Catbirds and the sharp 'whipcracks' of Eastern Whipbirds make for an unusual soundscape. #wildoz #fieldrecording #rainforest #soundscape #biodiversity #sound

Bumped into this little guy when I went to retrieve my recording rig. He freaked out when he saw me coming and decided burrowing under my backpack was the safest bet!
