You can't run on warnings of creeping authoritarianism and then bend yourself toward authoritarianism by embracing the GOP's trans panic. Wrote about this for @vanityfair.com: www.vanityfair.com/news/story/h...
How the GOP’s Trans Panic Has Shades of Putin’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Playbook
When it comes to trans rights, will Democrats be the willing handmaidens of the hard right?

This whole thread. One of the drums I consistently bang on is the idea that the majority of “civility” requirements is code for “the way we hurt you is polite and therefore allowed and you may not complain; the way you hurt us is rude and boorish and therefore you do not matter.”
It’s so interesting to see these urgent exhortations to reestablish decorum. I have not seen evidence of a “coarsening” of American society. If anything, the opposite: I’ve seen thousands of individuals asserting their humanity and protesting the indignity of the system UHC profits from.

Literally this.

If you are a cis person, even if you are an expert in some field that affects trans people, and you *think* you know some facts about trans people, I can almost guarantee you believe some things that are insanely wrong.
It blows my mind every day. I think a lot of it also has to do with preconceived notions almost everyone has from all the myths they've heard their entire life about trans people. They think they already know everything, so why listen

One piece of advice I have for every single trans person — and in particular trans woman, no matter where you live:

Learn self defense. Even better, learn martial arts. Learn how to stand up for yourself.

The system won’t protect you, but you can.

It’s genuinely shocking if you’re remotely familiar with the basic facts of trans care and youth medicine.

It is *profoundly* difficult to access gender-affirming care as a minor and the Times has printed more than a dozen articles implying that it is too easy.
in hindsight the NYT anti-trans crusade is one of the most despicable things that any big time journalism outfit in this country has ever done. a perfect and clearly intentional layup for the fascists on the Supreme Court

is it also a good place for letting @wyden.senate.gov & the rest of us convince you to vote against KOSA when that comes back up?

because you need to not give the GOP any more weapons to destroy lgbtq lives and you missed the mark on that when you voted yes in july.
I heard this is a good place to talk about taxing the rich, breaking up big tech, and ending Washington corruption.

My guess is that a lot of trans people will be feeling a ton of stress and worry over SCOTUS today.

If you are a cis person, quote this and say why you support trans people and what you are willing to do to support us if the government comes for us.

something i'm always on is leadership/seniority's grip on their power even extends to keeping out people in the party who agree with them on everything. even for those who have the exact same "more cops, bomb iran" beliefs, leadership goes "you get this when we're dead and not a minute before"
The party is genuinely adrift, and a large part of that rudderlessness is the fact that the Schumer/Pelosi faction simply will not step aside, despite a spectacular string of failures. We simply cannot be rid of them, even when they clearly are not up to the task at hand

In defense of democracy, decisive speed is of the essence. And the lack of that, more than anything, is what has landed America in its current mess. There is no curse too strong for the Democratic leadership who, after January 6th, dithered and delayed and sent everyone home to let tempers cool.
