Thinker about old stuff at Duke University. I have a website and this is a link to it: https://www.jenniferlwhyte.com/
I like to do this by entering a small local business and saying 'you're adorable! Look at you, with your products on little shelves, like it's still the 1970s!'

Nah, it will always be prime to me

This is also the state of my dilemma over whether I should read One Piece

"Oh, but the risk of a major spill is low" tell that to an 18-billion-dollar tourism industry entirely predicated on BC's reputation for unspoiled natural beauty. It doesn't have to be major, just big enough to make international news.

And one of my favourite linguistic facts is that many languages have a version of the expression 'It's all Greek to me', most of which are similarly digs at other languages. The best is the Esperanto, which goes in for an insult to fellow conlang Volapük.

I don't really know why the PNE even needs a big amphitheatre. The PNE is mostly a place where you go to watch slightly-to-very washed up old local acts. I saw Chilliwack there. It was great.

But hey, at least I'm the part of the problem that currently has 100 gyoza.
November 25, 2025 at 1:32 AM
The thing is, gyoza wrappers come in packs of about 100. And a pound of ground meat (plus other fillings like cabbage) makes about 100 gyoza. I made about 100 gyoza the other day. It was easy to make about 100 gyoza. The fact that I felt compelled to say all this means I'm part of the problem.

Catch me walking around the Pride Parade offering everyone the greetings of the season
November 24, 2025 at 10:02 PM
By the way, strictly speaking you can say 'Season's Greetings' in any season.

Certainly I would be surprised to find a musician who doesn't think the Beatles are important for a very good reason (unless they're a jazz musician or opera singer or something). But I do think they're more likely to understand The Beatles as a larger phenomenon than just those four guys

(it also features one of the most nuanced and even-handed treatments of the Led Zeppelin Plagiarism Question I've ever encountered. Strong recommend)

I've found the History of Rock Music in 500 Songs podcast to be an absolute breath of fresh air in this discourse. It does an extremely good job of showing what made the Beatles so special without pretending that they didn't also have influences or belong to a scene.
November 23, 2025 at 6:31 PM
The standard rock hagiography overrates everyone it touches, regardless of how deserving or influential they actually were. Countering that myth with 'actually all those guys were talentless hacks' is also wrong, of course, but that doesn't make the mythologized version right.
November 23, 2025 at 6:30 PM
Yes and no. It's true that people who say the Beatles were *bad* typically don't know what they're talking about, but musicians - especially working musicians - are also more likely to know that everyone in the standard Legend of Classic Rock is a little overrated because of how that story is told

I read an article a while back that catalogued the number of war crimes you can commit in every fire emblem game and the whole thing had to start with a blanket disclaimer that the author intended to ignore the child soldiers, because if he started talking about them we'll be here all day.

Bold of you to assume that's not already true of normal chess.
