Here we go, I guess?
Update: Commerce has now also posted its shutdown plan. BEA would completely shut down, and Census would shut down apart from some operations related to the 2030 decennial census. So no retail sales, international trade, PCE, GDP...

72° outside, low humidity, windows open… and the whirr of the passing helicopter. Again. And again. Enough.

DC’s avg last 90° day is ~9/12 (1871-2024). DCA’s first 90 this summer was 6/12 and last so far was 8/17 (65 day span), which could be the shortest since 2001 (57 days: 6/13-8/10) if it holds.

Oh no! Several of the Regional Climate Centers have had their funding lapse through DOC/NOAA. These institutes are critical for connecting weather and climate data and services to local communities across the United States.

Spread the word to drive attention and support!

Not great.

Fun fact, I used to work at NRCC when I was an undergrad.

Oh hey I know that building
NEW: The Trump admin has informed NOAA that two buildings that are critical for weather forecasting will have their leases canceled. If this comes to pass, it's a really big deal. Includes weather fcst nerve center in College Park, Md.: www.axios.com/2025/03/03/d...

On top of everything else at NOAA, NWS had an agreement with 18F for the modernization/redesign of weather.gov which was well underway. Literal man-years of effort just lit on fire, probably DOA now.

"Government efficiency" my ass. This is retribution on agencies that refused to bend the knee.
I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

The 10th percentile needs to verify 10% of the time otherwise it doesn’t mean anything.

In better news, the “low tracks” graphic that HPC/WPC produced since ~2002 (?) is now history. Here is the last one from today.

Been a dry 180 days for a few parts of the CONUS. Some places haven’t seen rain since May (Lancaster, CA)! Shown is the number of days since last 0.01”using StageIV data.

Bears watching!
For the Mid-Atlantic… the major players are in place. Details with the northern Pacific shortwaves swinging into the CONUS will decide whether it’s a wasted pattern or not.
