Came here to say this. Around the bean, Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park, it desperately needs more room

These are just a few blocks from each other and if I had to pick a fighter that fuckin’ target goes first. That’s the point I’m attempting to make. Chicago neighborhoods are full of these non descript one story buildings that could easily go first, so to speak.

I’m YIMBY-light, I guess. I think sometimes the approach can be kind of extreme and alienating and not good at building allies or picking the right battles. Knocking down a walgreens for a new old town tower is a no brainer to me. An old rowhouse? Not so much. That’s when I want to look around.

I’m not sure that’s progress. It’s also difficult because these things are more emotive and less quantifiable. Aesthetics, beauty, craftsmanship, history, materials, are all eye of the beholder. And people obviously do not see much value in those things vs their policy goals.

As an example. Chicago is sooooo fixated on the north side that nothing is else is seen as an opportunity and it’s deeply frustrating. It’s hard for me to walk by empty lots full of garbage everyday while theseadvocates are want to knock down a two flat graystone for a tacky 3-4 flat new const.

I understand, and I wasn’t arguing against upzoning. Nor against density or new development. I think it’s hard for me to look around the city and separate things. Why are we knocking down some irreplaceable 1870’s building when the entire Belmont Blue Line intersection should be razed and redone?

I used to live in Albany Park! Great neighborhood. Where do you live?
November 20, 2025 at 6:29 PM
I just don’t think we need to knock down Lincoln Park to do it. I think part of my argument is also maybe as a west sider some resentment towards all the resources in this city going to the North side. We talk about segregation and the working class and then focus on building up Lakeview.

Most everyone in my hood is super positive about new development. This is hopefully breaking ground soon and couldn’t be more excited. bsky.app/profile/chi....

Two vacant lots currently full of garbage right by the station and a bus stop. No displacement, no destruction, just additive.
November 20, 2025 at 6:04 PM
This is what I think the priority should be, this is a great example. bsky.app/profile/chi....

Yasssssss.

People should be able to live where they want! I agree! I just think redevelopment should start with vacant lots and go up the ladder from there before we start knocking everything down. Lots of room here! Also I’m gay in East Garfield Park, come here! We need you! 👋🏻

I’d kill to have those lots full of new neighbors.
November 20, 2025 at 5:57 PM
I dunno this convo is a lot of cherry picking and straw man stuff. The city doesn’t exist in a vacuum and there are so many hurting communities here that would kill for that four flat without needlessly destroying something in the process. There must be 10 vacant lots on the block next to me.

Glad we agree! Haha.

As DSA member myself DSA is absolutely shit on housing policy.

I DIDNT SAY THEY SHOULDNT
November 20, 2025 at 5:49 PM
So 90% of buildings are fair game.
November 20, 2025 at 5:45 PM
It seems like you were at one end of the slippery slope accusing me of being at the other end, but I'm not. Communities can reasonably decide some small percentage of their built environment is too important to change, but that number is probably sub 10% in most cases.
November 20, 2025 at 5:45 PM
I’m glad you do. :)
