It is quite nice to have my favorite team connection back after a lengthy renovation, just in time for the winter season when cycling gets a bit more tricky (and unpleasant).

The #PublicTransit operator #HSL has people handing out commemorative candies to mark the occasion in #Helsinki.

I also presented yesterday some preliminary work on exploring structural changes in the #Erasmus student mobility network in #Europe.

Student mobility has rebounded, and the structure has changed, with larger regional cities becoming more relevant, and Brexit removing the UK's relevance in Erasmus.

A map of student mobility flows going across Europe on the regional NUTS 3 level. Majority of the largest flows go between large cities in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and the UK. Some outlier major flows go to Stockholm, Istanbul, Dublin and Warsaw. The flows represent absolute numbers of Erasmus+ students and their origins and destinations. The flows have not been weighted by regional enrolled student counts, and thus regions with larger populations are emphasized, and potentially more meaningful patterns are not visible.

I found an interesting book of old maps and urban plans of #Helsinki, some of which I had never seen. I love this type of cartography, and I have a reproduction of one of these on my wall, because of course I do.

🙋 Why should I use it?

a) To improve legibility of large and complex flow data between origins and destinations. A map that is not clear is worthless.

b) To make cooler visualisations.

c) Because it is fun!

d) All of the above!
