This essay is an answer to that question in a way, but it also isn't. The truth is that my parents, like many abusive parents, will never say any of these things. They'll never apologize. They are not sorry for how they treated me. They don't believe they did anything wrong. They likely never will.

Exercise in ways that prepare your body to run away quickly, carry at least fifty pounds in a backpack, and throw heavy things at anyone attacking you, for no particular reason at all. Just a goofy, silly fitness goal for that you should focus on getting done by oh, I don’t know, say July 2027. Won’t that be fun?

Besides, it’s exhausting to have an endocrine system that already thought I was being hunted for sport every time I got more than one notification at a time having to suddenly cope with actually being the government’s new favorite game animal while a genocide rages on and the possibility of ever being able to live alone again slowly drifts out of reach alongside the price of eggs. I don’t know how even my co-workers who are relatively safe are keeping from popping their eyeballs like grapes in a microwave during one of our morning Zoom calls. The only thing presently tethering me to the earth are origami puffy stars, Stardew Valley, my enjoyment of housing and food, and living in the comparative liberal paradise of California. I have no clue how anyone else is managing it.

This is my new year's resolution list, by the way.
Stay on hormones for as long as you have access to them. If you lose access to your meds, definitely don’t start a drug cartel that traffics exclusively HRT, binders, breast forms, and packers. Do not go down in a blaze of glory surrounded by rubber dicks, silicone titties, and vials of testosterone. That would be awful.

Stay in therapy for as long as you have insurance that will cover it. When your insurance inevitably decides that everyone who needs mental health coverage should instead be sent to an RFK work farm, get on Red Bubble and have them print your therapist’s Psychology Today profile picture on a body pillow that you prop up in an arm chair and talk to. Be sure to shove it in the back of your closet after your 50-minute session in observance of your therapist’s professional and ethical boundaries. Try really hard not to think about it too hard in between sessions.

And yet, I keep showing up to work. I keep clocking in and doing more work than has been asked of me. I keep answering questions from other teams with a tone that seems to grin up from my Slack messages like a deranged cartoon character soon to start stealing and eating teeth. I keep making suggestions to my manager while quietly taking work off her plate, and doing my job in a way that makes the rest of my team furious.
