💡 This new approach could transform the slow trial-and-error drug development process into a scalable, computation-driven drug discovery pipeline powered by artificial intelligence.

🧠 Roman and his colleagues’ project proposes using artificial intelligence to uncover these hidden pathways by integrating data on plant metabolites, gene sequences, and enzyme activities. This builds on his previous work identifying molecules from natural samples and predicting enzyme functions.

🌿 Roman Bushuiev’s research
Plants act as powerful chemical factories producing many useful molecules, including medicines. However, for most of them (>95%), their “blueprints”—the biosynthetic pathways explaining how these substances are made—are still unknown.

Roman is currently in the 2nd year of the PhD program in Bioinformatics at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague 🧬. His supervisors are Tomáš Pluskal from the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences 🔬 and Josef Šivic from CIIRC CTU 🤖.

Her research focuses on developing eco-friendly building materials that could replace cement and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry. 🌿¨

📖 The discovery was published in Journal of Materials Chemistry C and was immediately selected among the most remarkable papers of 2025.

Why does it matter? It paves the way for cheaper, more efficient catalysis, new magnetic materials, and even the fight against antibiotic resistance. After light activation, the new molecules can kill more than 99.99% of dangerous pathogens – but only exactly where you shine the light.

➡️ The research is being conducted in collaboration with the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences and is supported by the Czech Science Foundation.

The result will be new materials that will contribute to cleaner water and energy. 🌊⚡

➡️ The aim is to increase the efficiency of these cells, improve their stability, and prevent damage (photocorrosion).

The results provide new insights into the development of semiconductors and the understanding of molecular dynamics.

Thanks to a cutting-edge experiment and calculations, a team led by Vít Svoboda from UCT Prague has managed to describe the ultrafast breakdown of a silane cation after photoionisation – in timescales of less than 150 fs!

The conference was held at the Pyramida Hotel with the support of Concrea and was attended by over 200 scientists and students from 30 countries, not only from Europe but also from overseas, e.g. Taiwan, Canada, USA.

This traditional conference is organized at two-year intervals and for the first time since 1991 it was organized in Prague.
