They channeled the frustration of puerto rican mad at the loss of the 1897 charter of autonomy from the US invasion to easily best the more pro-US Republican statehood party of Jose Celso Barbosa. They often were at odds with the US appointed governors.

Early days of puerto rican politics under US rule was dominated by an anti-colonial party known as the union party. Now this party was made up of 2 wings you had the hardline independence wing led by José de Diego And the moderate autonomy wig led by Luis Muños Rivera.

It's a couple days late. I had the privilege of seeing El Grand Combo at Radio City Music Hall last year. It was such a amazing performance. Hearing of Rafael Ithier passing is such a sad thing may he rest in peace

It was to undermine the independence movement Led by José de Diego whose primary political driving force at the time the Union Party controlled the Puerto Rican House of Delegates(the only locally elected body at that time)

We're working factory jobs living in concrete houses in suburbia with electricity & plumbing they'd achieve universal health care literacy rates were at 90%, 90% of puerto rico had acess to electricity, they built roads, bridges, they advanced education. Thats why people supported the status quo

Actually independence is far more likely to happen. The statehood party of Puerto Rico is conservative and neoliberal. They're entire history in governance has been full of nothing but corruption and erosion of the standard of living. Its why they're party has been bleeding support for years
