But to get to your point, Canada has been heavily influenced by primarily British and American ideals. For some reason, we love higher education; 1/3 of us have a uni degree, and 58% have a degree and/or a college diploma. I find it makes for a better democratic society to have informed citizens.

I've read similar stats: 54% of Americans are functionally illiterate. The greatest trick the Right ever pulled was convincing people that education is "elitist".
