I am genuinely confused by all this pageantry. He was not an elected official. I cannot think of another time a regular citizen being killed garnered this response. It’s perverse.

Unsurprisingly, the thing Noah Smith is saying is obviously not true.

Look at reports on the reaction to the assassination of MLK... "glee, satisfaction and weeping in equal parts" (www.nytimes.com/2018/04/02/r...) as the Smithsonian notes "some actually celebrated" (nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stor...).

holy shit dude using a fake deployment for wildland fire crews from a fire that’s only 13% contained during peak western US fire season to detain multiple firefighters and remove the crews from the fire is a scale of evil & dangerous I can’t fully communicate to people not from wildfire regions
Holy shit:

Stateline spoke to nearly a dozen firefighters, agency staffers and contractors, who said that top officials assigned to the fire deployed the crews to a remote location under false pretenses so federal agents could check their immigration status.

Firefighting veterans believe the management team overseeing fire crews played a key role in handing team members over to immigration authorities.

I understand these guys were contractors, but firefighters have powerful unions and it would be nice if they’d show up for these folks. Fwiw firefighters from all over the world, and especially Mx, have fought fires in the U.S. for as long as I I’ve been here. Mx sent people to LA, for example.

“Hanging out doesn’t have to cost money, but you still need the time to hang out. And you need the energy to hang out.”

This great essay covers a lot more, but ppl being too busy (working) and tired (from working) to invest in friendships is imo a big problem that ppl paper over with consumerism.
Instead of handwringing about the so-called loneliness epidemic among men, there’s a more interesting conversation to be had about what close bonds and friendship for *anyone* even look like right now. Especially through the prism of TV
Is “Severance” a hangout show?
Why aren't we seeing more friendships depicted on screen, and is that just reflecting the atrophy of our social lives in the real world?

Quick little fact check here: Israel has armed the Burmese military for decades, including during the Rohingya Genocide. Protesting Israel’s genocidal regime directly and materially benefits the people of Myanmar.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

so cool how starlink justifies a pullback in public internet subsidies and buildout
Starlink's connection speeds drop below the federal definition of "broadband" at a density of ~7 customers per square mile, according to recent research. The more the customers in an area, the slower everybody's connections get. Data shows that 83% of US Starlink customers get sub-broadband speeds.

this is the most succinct demonstration of why you shouldn't debate or engage directly with fascists.

a lot of people i respect are into the whole 'filmed public discourse with the other side' thing but imo all that does is help them raise money
“I debated Mehdi Hasan and got fired for it” is going to turn into a viable grift for several of these fascist douchebags.

This is why you don’t platform fascists.

Really impossible to overstate how completely this guy has failed at every aspect of being an opposition leader over the past six months. Jeffries is a truly inspiring example for every soulless careerist who would rather be king of nothing than stand for anything decent in the world.

Yep. There’s a clear message for a lot of Global South and Middle Eastern countries tonight. Sadly. And it isn’t a nonproliferation message.
