'Who is this country for' is an excellent question. Honestly, the answer in too many places is: 'It is for those who already have everything'.

I think Dante's fourth circle moved up to Oxford st. Can't stand the place

Morning Womble! I'm currently reading Julie Phillips' excellent The Baby on the Fire Escape. I suspect I'll be following that up with a chaser of Frances Hardinge.

I find films and manga are still platforms for conversation, but it's true that I'm engaging mostly with a young adult+ age group. Not so sure about the under 14 cohort...

Being a writer is like surfing. Always hoping to catch the perfect wave, but most of your time will be spent paddling against the tide or just floating, waiting, eyes on the horizon while you watch other people riding their highs into the sunset. But you have to love the work more than the ride.

So, if you're in a similar boat:
* you are not alone
* publishing is harder than it used to be
* people are only showing their highlight reels; you don't see all their disappointments
* fomo is baked into the internet
* art will save you when nothing else will
* WRITING IS REBELLION

Art is an act of hope. Writing is an act of rebellion. The world will always need more stories--from real human beings, not bullshit plagiarism machines. Every book is a love story from the author, and every reader is fighting the war against cruelty, ignorance, and hopelessness. We are fighting.

From 6 months ago but a reminder of how migrants have enriched our lives in the UK. (Many of these authors were also refugees). #KidLitUK

An island of strangers? Just imagine British children's books without the work of migrants & their children – all of these & more!

Someone did a great 'misheard lyrics' version of that song which I can no longer find in the fiery dumpster that is the internet

Another rather-more-obsessed-with-the-golden-hare-than-is-normal person here.

I do think this book set up my young mind for an optimistic and erroneous idea of what the adult world was about (what, we don't all grow up to be artists who bury treasure and plant clues for children to find? WHY?)
