I use Tado (it has great homekit support). Controls are via app, but you can also use the wall units that you replace the old thermostats with, so it doesn't need internet.
Installation was pretty easy- I'm the least DIY-competent person on the planet and I managed it 😅

The FT has a rather excellent 'FT Edit' app where they select 8 articles each day, for £5/mo or so. I wouldn't get enough value out of a £60 subscription but I really liked Edit.
