Legendary pop artist Ed Ruscha loves gas station art. It makes sense he'd dig COUNT THE DUST.

You can dig it too. Paperback and ebook are available this Tuesday, 12/2, from @leftoverbooks.bsky.social: a.co/d/dTF7R33

Red Roses, Red Roses
A girl of mystery
Her hair hangs down yellow
But her skin is Shawnee
She lives in caliche pits
Outside of town
And fires her long rifle
At the sun going down...

Gawd, Terry Allen has a brilliant mind for character creation. Spin #1 today:

Born (1936) and died (2004) on this day: master of dirty realism, Lucia Berlin. Glad I found her writing. I return to it and think of it often.

What makes a man think that he
Can forget about what used to be
Be happy with the way life is
Not think about what once was his?

Born on this day in 1922: the great Kurt Vonnegut.

My 11th grade English teacher threw me a Vonnegut book and said "YOU-read this ONE." He's my first literary love and he's why I wanted to be a writer.

The postcard Vonnegut sent me when I wrote him to ask a bunch of questions:

This one mirror at school always makes me double take because I feel like it makes my head look giant. Then I always reflect on how I’m always not really sure what I look like. Is this a common feeling?

Of course Spin #1 today is Guy.

This was released earlier this year. It's a 1970 Houston coffee shop performance recording. Pretty interesting mix of his early originals (including "Step Inside My House") and some covers of Dylan and other folk stuff.

She standin' on the gone side of leavin'
She found a thumb and stuck it in the breeze
She'll take anything goin' close to somewhere
She can lay it down and live it like she'd please

"I hate endings. Just detest them. Beginnings are definitely the most exciting, middles are perplexing and endings are a disaster..."

Born on this day in 1943: the brilliant Sam Shepard.

And it's six in the morning
Gave me no warning, I had to be on my way
Well, there's trucks all a-passing me, and the lights all a-flashin'
I'm on my way home from your place

She said, "If you're from Texas, son
Then where's your boots and where's your gun?"
I smiled and said, "I got guns no one can see"
We laughed at that and both agreed

I got these great Bob Wills 45s from my papa's collection. My dad said something about my great aunt dating or marrying Bob Wills' brother. Possible given they lived in central Oklahoma but unconfirmable now. Anyway, saw this awesome poster in The Lowdown and thought of them.
