Most “rivals” are actually friends IRL, they just pretend to hate each other for the cameras. And when the story dictates the good guys lose, they make sure to play up how close it was to garner sympathy and support.

This is a quite fitting descriptor for elected Democrats. They are playing characters loosely based on themselves, and most of what they do is carefully scripted and determined “backstage”, and includes the people you see and know AND the BTS crew and writers that you don’t.
